The MEC for department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DESTEA), Thabo Meeko and Free State Premier Mxolisi Dukwana will join forces to officially inaugurate the Rui Star Iron-Steel plant on Friday, July 21, 2023, at Thaba Nchu Industrial Park.
The establishment of this smelter plant aims to drive economic growth in the Free State and surrounding areas, while also addressing the pressing need for job creation.
By sourcing scrap metals from various parts of the country, the company will process these materials into steel and iron for both the domestic and international markets. With a significant investment of over R300 million, the plant has already generated 150 job opportunities, and its full operational capacity is expected to expand the workforce to over 500 employees.
MEC Meeko highlighted the importance of investments like the Rui Star Iron-Steel plant in attracting more business investors to contribute to the growth of the Free State economy. The primary objective is to generate employment opportunities that benefit the local population.

In order to foster an environment conducive to attracting investment and unlocking local economic opportunities, DESTEA engaged in a roadshow, holding meetings with local municipalities.
Through these consultations, incentive packages were explored and tailored to entice further investments.
The launch of the Rui Star Iron-Steel plant signifies a crucial milestone in the pursuit of economic development and job creation in the Free State.
This strategic investment showcases the government’s commitment to fostering an investor-friendly environment and providing job prospects for local residents.
