Today the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) reports 8 988 new COVID-19 cases that have been identified in South Africa, which brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 2 470 746. This increase represents a 19.8% positivity rate.
As per the National Department of Health, a further 555 COVID-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 72 992 to date.
14 971 894 tests have been conducted in both public and private sectors as per the table below.

The majority of new cases today are from Western Cape and Gauteng which accounted for (25%) each, followed by KwaZulu-Natal (19%) Eastern Cape accounted for 9%; Mpumalanga accounted for 6%; North West accounted for 5%; Free State and Limpopo accounted for 4% each; and Northern Cape accounted for 2% of today’s new cases
