Last-gasp Equalizer Secures Sundowns Draw against Chiefs in MTN8 Semifinal

Mamelodi Sundowns VS Kaizer Chiefs

Mamelodi Sundowns managed to salvage a 1-1 draw against Kaizer Chiefs in the first leg of the MTN8 semifinal.

The thrilling match, held at the FNB Stadium, saw the home team take the lead through Edson Castillo, only for Khuliso Mudau to score a remarkable equalizer in injury time. The result sets up an intriguing second leg in Tshwane later this month.

From the start, Sundowns dominated possession and controlled the pace of the game. However, their attempts to break through Chiefs’ resilient defense proved challenging.

Lucas Ribeiro Costa came close to leveling the score in the first half with an ambitious lob, but goalkeeper Brandon Petersen made a crucial save.

The Brazilians were dealt a setback when influential player Themba Zwane suffered a facial injury due to an accidental collision with Yusuf Maart. This incident led to the introduction of Lesiba Nku off the substitutes’ bench.

Temporarily affected by the injury break, Chiefs’ defense displayed a momentary lapse in concentration. Ribeiro Costa managed to take advantage, forcing Petersen to make another save with a powerful left-footed drive. However, Chiefs regained their composure and kept Sundowns at bay until halftime.

The second half witnessed the debut of Colombian forward Jasond Gonzalez for Chiefs. But it was Castillo, a Venezuelan, who broke the deadlock in the 61st minute. A well-executed attack down the right flank resulted in Ashley Du Preez crossing the ball to Castillo, who scored with a diving header.

Sundowns pushed for an equalizer, and Ribeiro Costa came close in the 67th minute, but once again, Petersen denied him. Sensing the urgency, Sundowns made a triple substitution, bringing on Terrence Mashego, Bathusi Aubaas, and Siyabonga Mabena in their quest to level the game.

With just seven minutes left on the clock, Marcelo Allende almost secured an equalizer with a clever attempt that forced Petersen into a scrambling save. Despite his efforts, the entire ball did not cross the line.

As the game entered injury time, Sundowns finally found the equalizer. Substitute Junior Mendieta delivered a superb cross from the left, and Mudau’s bullet header proved too much for Petersen to handle.

The tie now hangs in the balance as the teams prepare for the second leg at Lucas Moripe Stadium on September 23rd.
