The Land Party is calling for the South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to declare 28 October a National Rugby Day, which should be celebrated annually.
Ramaphosa declared Friday, 15 December 2023 as a public holiday in celebration of the Springboks’ victory and other sports men and women.
“We declare this to be a day of hope, a day of celebration and unity,” said Ramaphosa.
While they are celebrating the victory of Springboks, the party has applauded Ramaphosa for honouring and including the South African rugby team in his national address.
“The idea of a public holiday to us did not mean a day off but we expected an annual holiday to celebrate the sporting culture in the country in general.
“The Land Party is calling for a consideration of the 28th of October to be a National Rugby Day where the government will in each year build a rugby stadium in a black township or rural area to encourage participation of black people in the sporting code.
“Currently, rugby is dominated by whites and a minority of the black community that enrolled in private schools,” said Land Party spokesperson Avela Sithonga.
Speaking about the COVID-19 social relief grant, the party has criticised the governing party, African National Congress (ANC), for giving beneficiaries R350 grant.
The party said they will eradicate poverty through sustainable collective farming in the rural areas.
“…because we acknowledge the ability of our people to produce food in their own land not as per the slavery project championed in the Western Cape.
“The Land Party criticises the President for making the poor believe that R350 grant is a solution to the millions of starving South African, it is through this approach of governing that the DA campaigns on the Eastern Cape poverty margins only to propose solutions that will advance the capitalists.”
According to Ramaphosa, the SRD Grant has kept millions of residents out of poverty, since 2020.
Meanwhile, the party is disappointed by how the ANC is managing the struggling state-owned enterprises (SOEs).
“The Land Party is disappointed by the ANC’s failure to govern, the attempts to give responsibility to the private sector will once again extend inequality and challenge the ability of the state to cater for its citizens.
“It is fact that the private sector is dominated by supremacists who continue to exclude the majority and previously disadvantaged people in high profile jobs,” Sithonga said.
Speaking about economic progress, Ramaphosa announced that the Presidential Employment Stimulus has created over 1.2 million opportunities, which represents the largest expansion of public employment in the country.
“Over 4 million young people have registered on the SAYouthonline platform, and more than 1 million of these have been able to access opportunities for learning and earning,” Ramaphosa said.
