Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Ronald Lamola, called for an immediate end to the violence that has engulfed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Lamola  was addressing the 61st annual meeting of the Asian African Legal Consultative Organisation (AALCO) in Bali.

Lamola emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian assistance to alleviate the suffering of those affected and urged all parties involved to halt the cycle of atrocities and human rights violations.

Highlighting South Africa’s longstanding foreign policy supporting Palestinian nationhood, Lamola stressed the government’s commitment to promoting a viable and sustainable peace plan for the Middle East. He emphasized the importance of securing Palestine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and economic viability while ensuring sovereign equality between Palestine and Israel. Lamola cited international law and various resolutions, such as the Oslo Accords, the Roadmap, and the Arab Plan 2002, as the foundation for South Africa’s policy position, which recognizes the two-State option as the only viable solution.

Calling upon members of the AALCO to unite and find a permanent resolution to the conflict, Lamola underlined the significance of adhering to United Nations resolutions, international law, and internationally agreed parameters. He expressed a vision of a world where every nation abides by international law and collaborates to promote peaceful coexistence, emphasizing that achieving this goal requires collective effort from the international community.

In his closing remarks, Lamola reminded attendees of their responsibility as global citizens to take action against violations of international law and obstacles to peace. He stressed the importance of working together and providing support to effectively address these challenges.

Minister Ronald Lamola’s impassioned plea at the AALCO meeting serves as a reminder of the urgency to end the violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It also emphasizes the need for international cooperation and adherence to established frameworks in order to achieve a lasting and peaceful resolution.
