Mangaung
By Mpho Moloi
Residents of Mangaung can breathe a sigh of relief as laboratory tests have confirmed that the city’s discolored water is free from E.coli contamination. Following concerns from residents, samples were taken from affected areas, and both microbiological and chemical analysis showed no traces of the harmful bacteria.
According to the city’s spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, chlorine levels in the water were also found to be sufficient, ensuring that disinfection remains effective. The municipality reassured the public that routine testing will continue to monitor water quality and rectify any discoloration issues. The city has taken steps to ensure the water adheres to the South African National Standards (SANS 241), which governs tap water safety.
Earlier in the week, Mangaung residents expressed concerns about the appearance of their water in areas like Fleurdal, Universitas, and Langenhoven Park. The discolored water was primarily attributed to residual particles in the reticulation system, which are being closely monitored and cleared. Water services have begun to show improvements, with the city promising regular updates to keep residents informed of further developments.
The municipality apologized for any inconvenience caused and encouraged residents to remain patient as they continue working towards resolving the issue.
The Department of Water and Sanitation, in collaboration with Vaal Central Water, is ensuring compliance with safety standards, reinforcing the city’s commitment to delivering safe drinking water .
