KZN Premier Thami Ntuli

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli has called for a united effort between communities and law enforcement to create a safer environment for women and children. This appeal comes in the wake of the tragic murder of Nontobeko Cele by her partner, Sbusiso Lawrence, who subsequently took his own life after posting a confession video on social media.

A Disturbing Incident Amidst National Campaign

The timing of this incident is particularly troubling, as it occurred shortly after the launch of the national 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign. Premier Ntuli expressed deep concern over this, emphasizing the urgent need to address the root causes of gender-based violence (GBV) and the systemic failures that allow such tragedies to persist.

Addressing the Root Causes of GBV

Premier Ntuli has been vocal about the necessity of tackling the underlying issues contributing to GBV. He has highlighted the importance of community involvement and the implementation of comprehensive strategies to combat this pervasive issue. In a recent statement, he reiterated the government’s commitment to fighting the abuse and murder of women and children, urging residents to continue this fight throughout the year.

Encouraging Men to Seek Help

Bongani Gina, spokesperson for the Premier, emphasized the importance of men seeking help when dealing with emotions that could lead to violence. He stated, “We want to encourage men to speak out and seek help when faced with situations that trigger anger or emotional distress. Addressing these emotions constructively is key to preventing violence and fostering healthier relationships. Seeking support is not a sign of weakness but a courageous step toward personal growth and building a safer, more compassionate society.”

Government Initiatives to Combat GBV

The KwaZulu-Natal government has been proactive in its efforts to combat GBV. Premier Ntuli recently led a march against gender-based violence to conclude the 16 Days of Activism campaign, declaring, “Our march today is a statement of our collective will. We are here to say enough is enough. Gender-Based Violence has no place in our province or our country, and we all have a role to play in ensuring the safety and dignity of every woman and child.”

Furthermore, the province has introduced GBV Ambassadors who will work alongside community leaders, law enforcement, and survivors to drive education and advocacy initiatives across the province. This initiative aims to transition from an annual focus to a sustained, year-long effort to address GBV.

Community Involvement and Law Enforcement Collaboration

The Premier has stressed the importance of community involvement in combating GBV. He urged communities to unite against gender-based violence and femicide, highlighting that the fight against GBV cannot be confined to a 16-day campaign but requires year-round advocacy.

Additionally, over 100 activists have been placed across KwaZulu-Natal police stations to support efforts in tackling gender-based violence. These activists will work at stations to raise awareness and drive efforts to combat the scourge, interacting with the community and survivors.
