KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police have confiscated pure cocaine valued at over R80 million, hidden within a container at Durban Harbour on Monday, 2 December 2024. The illicit substance was cleverly disguised as kidney beans.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda revealed that authorities had been tipped off about a vessel departing Brazil in early November, suspected of transporting cocaine camouflaged as kidney beans. The ship, which made a stopover in another country before reaching South Africa, was under surveillance until it docked at Durban Harbour on Saturday, 30 November 2024. The targeted container was subsequently moved to a warehouse on South Coast Road in the Bluff area for a thorough inspection.

“During the search, eight bags of crushed pure cocaine were discovered,” stated Colonel Netshiunda. Documentation indicated that the shipment was destined for Johannesburg. Investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for the consignment.

This operation underscores the persistent efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking through South African ports. Notably, this is not an isolated incident. In December 2023, police seized cocaine worth R151 million at Durban Harbour, concealed in meat boxes. Similarly, in October 2023, authorities intercepted cocaine valued at R70 million, hidden in 20-litre paint containers aboard a vessel from Brazil.
