The judiciary of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has been enveloped in mourning following the recent passing of two distinguished retired judges, Judge Nic Van Der Reyden and Judge Sham Gyanda. The office of the Judge President has expressed its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased, extolling their lasting contributions to the legal profession.

Legacy of Judge Nic Van Der Reyden

Judge Nic Van Der Reyden, who passed away on Wednesday, 12 June 2024, had a venerable career spanning over three decades. His commitment to justice and his unpretentious demeanour characterised his tenure, which lasted until his retirement in 2010.

“Judge Van Der Reyden will be remembered for his abiding decency and humility…a true salt of the earth,” stated the office of the Judge President. “The Judges of the KwaZulu-Natal Division extend their sincere condolences to his wife Dain, his son Nicholas, and daughter Marijke, as well as to the wider family and loved ones.”

Van Der Reyden’s enduring legacy within the legal fraternity continues to serve as an inspiration to both current and future generations of legal professionals.

The Cherished Memory of Judge Sham Gyanda

Judge Sham Gyanda passed away on Monday, 17 June 2024, after a long and illustrious career both as an advocate and a judicial officer. His robust 40-year journey in the legal field culminated in his retirement in 2020 due to health concerns.

“He was a valued member of the bench, a trusted colleague, and a friend to all. Both at the Bar and on the bench, in addition to sound advice, he always had a kind word and a smile for all who sought his counsel and guidance,” noted the office. “If the occasion permitted, a joke, sometimes naughty and sometimes wicked, would be added in. We remember our brother with fondness.”

The offices extended deep sympathy to his widow, Shireen, his children Kajal, Sahil, and Alka, and the extended family. Judge Gyanda’s enriching presence and invaluable mentorship leave an indelible mark on South Africa’s judicial landscape.

Condolences from the KwaZulu-Natal Judiciary

The untimely demise of Judges Van Der Reyden and Gyanda has undeniably left a void within the KwaZulu-Natal judiciary. Their collective dedication to the rule of law and their ability to humanise the judicial process earned them widespread respect and admiration.

“The Judges of the KwaZulu-Natal Division send their heartfelt condolences to the families of Judge Van Der Reyden and Judge Gyanda. Their lives and careers will continue to inspire all of us in the judiciary,” commented the Judge President’s office.
