KZN Government Recommends Second Term for Police Commissioner Mkhwanazi Amid Praise for Crime Fight
Durban – The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government has thrown its weight behind Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, saying it would recommend him for a second term when his current contract ends in March 2026. Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli praised Mkhwanazi’s leadership during a recent session, highlighting the intense battle against criminals under his watch.
While no formal talks have started on extending the contract, the government’s satisfaction with his performance signals strong support for the top cop who has been at the forefront of exposing corruption in law enforcement. Mkhwanazi, testifying before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee, confirmed his term’s end date but noted the lack of renewal discussions. This endorsement comes amid ongoing probes into political interference and crime syndicates, where Mkhwanazi has been a key whistleblower.
The commissioner’s role has been pivotal in tackling KwaZulu-Natal’s high crime rates, including political killings and extortion. Ntuli’s comments reflect a belief that Mkhwanazi’s strategies are making a real difference, potentially setting the stage for his continued leadership in one of South Africa’s most challenging provinces.
Premier Ntuli’s Strong Endorsement
During the session, Ntuli did not hold back in his admiration for Mkhwanazi’s work. “On the fight that the police are waging on the criminals, one cannot recommend leadership that is showing understanding of the province that are facing the province of KwaZulu-Natal,” he said. He added: “I’ve always maintained that there is no way one can not recommend a police officer like Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi to continue with the work that he is doing.”
Ntuli highlighted how the war on crime has ramped up under Mkhwanazi, describing it as more intense than ever before. This praise aligns with Mkhwanazi’s public efforts to root out corruption, including his July 2025 briefing where he accused top officials of meddling in investigations. His testimony at the Ad Hoc Committee and the Madlanga Commission has exposed alleged syndicates protecting criminals, earning him respect from many quarters.
The provincial government, through Ntuli, expressed satisfaction with Mkhwanazi’s track record, noting his understanding of KZN’s unique challenges like taxi violence, construction mafias, and political murders. While the final decision on extensions lies with national authorities, this recommendation could influence outcomes.
Mkhwanazi’s Testimony: Contract Uncertainty Amid Probes
Mkhwanazi himself addressed his future during his appearance at the Ad Hoc Committee, confirming his contract ends in March 2026. “Mkhwanazi’s term as commissioner is set to end in March 2026. However, there is no clarity on whether his contract will be extended,” as reported. He told the committee there are no ongoing talks about renewal, focusing instead on his current duties.
As a key witness in probes into corruption and interference, Mkhwanazi has faced scrutiny but also acclaim. He recently withdrew an allegation against former Minister Bheki Cele due to a data error, showing his commitment to accuracy. His leadership has been credited with intensifying operations against syndicates, leading to arrests and seizures.
