Flooding in Ladysmith
The recent heavy rains in KwaZulu-Natal have resulted in tragic consequences for the residents of Ladysmith. The Bellspruit River burst its banks, causing flooding and claiming the lives of several individuals. In response, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government has offered support to the families of the flood victims in Ladysmith.
Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube extended her condolences to the families of the flood victims in the province, expressing her sympathy for the loss of life. The premier acknowledged the devastating impact of the floods and emphasized the importance of providing support to the affected families during this difficult time.
MEC for Cooperative Governance Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi has also been on the ground in Ladysmith, personally assessing the damage and meeting with the families of the victims. The provincial government has committed to providing full support to the affected families, including offering assistance with disaster relief efforts and coordinating search and rescue operations.
Search and rescue teams, including the SAPS K9 Unit, IPSS Medical Rescue, and the Al-Imdaad Foundation for Disaster Response, have intensified their efforts to locate the missing individuals. The increasing number of missing persons has prompted a concerted and relentless search operation in the Ladysmith area.
MEC Sithole-Moloi visited the Msimango family, who tragically lost six members in the floods. She led a delegation of disaster response teams in distributing essential relief items, such as blankets, mattresses, and other amenities, to the affected families. The provincial government, in cooperation with various departments and disaster response partners, is committed to providing ongoing support to those who have lost everything.
In addition to material aid, the provincial government has emphasized the availability of counselling services for the affected families. Plans for the burials of those who have passed away are also being organized, with assurances that every effort will be made to locate those who are still missing.
The disaster management teams are working closely with local municipalities and government departments, including Home Affairs and Social Development, to assess the full extent of the damage and provide support to families who have lost personal documents and belongings.
