KZN Government Declares Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s Grave a Provincial Heritage Site
The KwaZulu‑Natal provincial government has officially declared Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s grave a provincial heritage site in honour of his enduring legacy.
The declaration took place on 27 August 2025, coinciding with what would have been the late Prince’s 97th birthday, at his family home in KwaPhindangene, near Ulundi in northern KwaZulu‑Natal . The ceremony, known as the launch of “Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s Place of Rest” as a provincial heritage site, was led by Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli, alongside Cogta Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa, members of the Zulu royal house and political dignitaries .
Buthelezi was a monumental figure. He served as the longest‑serving traditional prime minister to three successive Zulu kings—King Cyprian Bhekuzulu, King Goodwill Zwelithini, and King Misuzulu—over 70 years, and held state leadership roles including Chief Minister of KwaZulu and Minister of Home Affairs in post‑apartheid South Africa .
At the launch, Premier Ntuli emphasised the government’s commitment to preserving Buthelezi’s legacy, highlighting his pivotal role in the freedom struggle, his advocacy for traditional leaders (Amakhosi), and his protection of Zulu land under the Ingonyama Trust Act. He also recalled Buthelezi’s transformative leadership in advancing education—schools, colleges, universities—and economic development through zones such as KwaSithebe and Amabhodini .
The provincial government announced that the designation marks the beginning of a three‑year project aimed at enhancing the site, with the hope that it will eventually be elevated to national heritage and even world heritage status, boosting tourism and cultural commemoration .

The move was warmly welcomed by the IFP founder’s family. His son, Inkosi Zuzifa Buthelezi, spoke of the honour as a moving legacy: Despite the emotional pain of growing up with a father consumed by public service, the recognition showed that “what he did was not in vain” .
Support also came from the ANC in KwaZulu‑Natal. ANC provincial task team coordinator Mike Mabuyakhulu affirmed that the party, part of the Government of Provincial Unity, fully backs the decision, and urged the government to continue honouring other heroes in a similar manner .
Why This Move Matters
• Cultural preservation – Declaring Buthelezi’s grave as a heritage site enshrines the memory of a leader who bridged tradition and modern governance, ensuring his story inspires future generations.
• Educational value – The site will serve as a living history lesson, teaching about the Zulu monarchy, KwaZulu politics, the fight against apartheid, and post-1994 governance.
• Tourism and economy – Elevating the site to national or world heritage status could draw local and international visitors, supporting the regional economy and cultural tourism.
• Unity and reconciliation – The event brought together diverse political parties, royal figures, and government representatives—symbolising a shared respect for Buthelezi’s complex, layered legacy.
