KZN East Coast
Durban – People living along KwaZulu-Natal’s east coast should get ready for strong winds that could cause problems on Sunday, 6 October 2025. This comes after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) put out a yellow level 4 warning on Saturday. The service also says showers with thunder might hit parts of KZN, the Eastern Cape, and the Western Cape. Forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela warned that these weather patterns could make it hard for boats and ships at sea. “We’re expecting partly cloudy conditions to dominate the central part into the eastern areas, with a 30 per cent chance of showers and thundershowers expected over the Northern Cape, the Northwest, the Free State into KwaZulu-Natal and the eastern half of the Eastern Cape. Scattered showers and thundershowers are expected over the central and the western parts of KwaZulu-Natal into the afternoon into the extreme eastern parts of the Free State,” Thobela said.
This alert follows a string of recent warnings across the country, with SAWS keeping a close eye on changing conditions. While the yellow level 4 focuses on winds that could damage homes or disrupt travel, other areas face risks from heavy rain and hail. As spring brings unstable weather, experts urge folks to stay updated and take steps to stay safe, like securing loose items and avoiding open water.
SAWS Issues Yellow Level 4 Warning for Disruptive Winds
The South African Weather Service rolled out the yellow level 4 warning for damaging winds along KZN’s east coast, set to hit hardest on Sunday. [5] This level means there’s a big chance of trouble, like fallen trees blocking roads or power cuts from broken lines. The warning covers the eastern coastal belt, where gusts could make driving tough and knock over light structures.
In other spots, SAWS flagged yellow level 2 for severe thunderstorms in central and western KZN on Saturday afternoon into evening. [10] These could bring hail, heavy downpours, and strong winds, leading to floods on low roads or damage to buildings. The service also warned of level 1 damaging winds in the Eastern Cape from Saturday to Sunday, hitting places like Molteno, Komani, and Cradock. [0] In the Western Cape, yellow level 1 alerts for damaging waves and winds run from Sunday to Monday, affecting areas from Cape Point to Plettenberg Bay. [2]
These warnings build on earlier ones, like a yellow level 2 for damaging waves between Saldanha Bay and other coastal spots. [1] SAWS says the mix of winds and showers comes from a weather system moving across the south and east.
Expected Impacts on Daily Life and Marine Navigation
The windy conditions could shake things up for folks in KZN’s east coast towns, like Durban and Richards Bay. SAWS warns of risks to homes, especially informal ones, and trouble for trucks on open roads. [4] Power lines might come down, causing blackouts, and loose stuff could fly around, hurting people or property.
At sea, Thobela pointed out challenges for boats. “These conditions could also impact marine navigation,” he said. Warnings note small vessels might capsize or take on water, with ports facing short disruptions. [10] In the Western Cape, similar alerts flag risks for beach activities and high-sided vehicles on bridges. [8]
Thunderstorms add more worries, with hail possible in open areas and slippery roads leading to crashes. [6] In the Eastern Cape, winds could spark runaway fires or damage settlements. [3] Veld fire risks also pop up in the Northern Cape, Northwest, and Free State on Saturday. [10]
Forecaster’s Insights and Broader Weather Patterns
Lehlohonolo Thobela from SAWS gave a clear picture of what’s coming. He expects partly cloudy skies in central and eastern parts, with a 30% chance of showers and thunder over the Northern Cape, Northwest, Free State, KZN, and eastern Eastern Cape. Scattered storms could hit central and western KZN into the afternoon, reaching the far east of the Free State.
This fits a bigger spring pattern, where cold fronts from the south mix with warmer air, sparking unstable weather. Similar conditions hit earlier in the week, with damaging winds in multiple provinces on Saturday. SAWS keeps updating alerts, urging people to check their site or app for the latest.
Weather Across Other Provinces
Beyond KZN, the Eastern Cape faces ongoing wind warnings into Sunday, with possible fire risks. The Western Cape deals with waves and winds that could disrupt ports and beaches from Sunday.
In the north, the Northern Cape, Northwest, and Free State might see scattered showers, with veld fire alerts on Saturday. Gauteng and other inland spots could get thunderstorms too, with warnings for heavy rain and hail.
