South Africa’s kwaito music community is in mourning following the tragic death of Sandile Ngwenya, known by his stage name Mapaputsi. The beloved artist, famed for his groundbreaking hit Izinja, passed away on the night of Thursday, 5 September 2024, after battling a short illness. His death was confirmed by his manager, Busi Kunene, who shared that an official press statement and media briefing will be held in due course. The Ngwenya family also expressed their sadness and requested privacy during this time, while thanking the public for their outpouring of love and support.

Mapaputsi was a pioneer of the kwaito genre, joining the ranks of iconic artists such as Zola 7 and TKZee. His 2001 album, Izinja, was a cultural anthem that earned him widespread acclaim, including two Metro FM Awards for Best Kwaito Artist and Best Kwaito Song in 2002. Throughout his career, Mapaputsi remained a vibrant force in the music industry, and his contribution to South African music will be remembered fondly by fans and fellow musicians alike.

Earlier in August, Mapaputsi denied rumours that he had been bedridden, even jokingly dismissing the claims in a video where he appeared relaxed and in good spirits. However, his health declined rapidly in the following weeks, leading to his passing in early September. Tributes have since poured in on social media, with fans and fellow artists sharing memories of how his music shaped their lives. One fan tweeted, “Rest in power, to the original NTJA’KA, the biggest Dawg. MAPAPUTSI”

As the family prepares funeral arrangements, further details about memorial services are expected to be released soon. Mapaputsi’s legacy will undoubtedly live on, as he leaves behind a lasting impact on the South African music scene. His work continues to inspire a new generation of artists who look to the vibrant era of kwaito music for inspiration.Kaizer Chiefs Assistant Coach Fernando Da Cruz Departs to Join Moroccan Football Federation
