Kruger National Park (KNP)
By Lerato Mpembe
The Kruger National Park (KNP) has temporarily closed several entry gates and roads due to heavy rainfall in the Mpumalanga province. The downpours have led to significant damage, particularly on main roads between Skukuza and Lower Sabie. South African National Parks (SANParks) spokesperson, Ike Phaahla, has advised visitors to exercise caution when approaching low-lying bridges and to adhere to all road closures.
Road and Gate Closures
As a precautionary measure, KNP disaster management operations have been activated. Gravel roads and low-lying bridges have been closed to ensure visitor safety. Notably, the Crocodile Bridge Gate and Malelane Gate are currently inaccessible due to the flooding of the Crocodile River. Visitors are advised to use alternative gates and to remain on tarred roads, avoiding gravel routes that may be compromised.
Safety Advisory
Phaahla emphasized the importance of vigilance during this period, stating, “KNP disaster management operations have been activated because of the heavy downpours which have led to gravel roads and low bridges being closed as a precautionary measure. To our operators, tourists plus drivers within the park are requested to be patient and extra vigilant during this period.” Visitors are urged not to attempt crossing flooded bridges or roads, as the dangers of being washed away are high. Guests are also encouraged to check with camp management and reception about the status of the roads they plan to travel on before embarking on their journeys.
Impact on Tourism and Wildlife
The heavy rains have not only affected infrastructure but also the natural habitat within the park. Flooded areas may alter animal movement patterns, and some species might seek higher ground. Visitors should remain cautious and maintain a safe distance from wildlife, as animals may be stressed or disoriented due to the changing environment.
Historical Context
This is not the first time KNP has faced challenges due to heavy rainfall. In February 2023, similar conditions led to the closure of several roads and camps, including Lower Sabie, Crocodile Bridge, Biyamiti, and Talamati. The park’s management has since implemented more robust disaster management protocols to respond swiftly to such natural events, ensuring both visitor safety and the preservation of wildlife habitats.
Visitor Recommendations
Guests planning to visit KNP during this period are advised to:
• Stay Informed: Regularly check official SANParks communication channels for updates on road and gate statuses.
• Plan Ahead: Contact camps directly or the KNP administration offices at 013 735 4000 for the latest information before traveling.
• Exercise Caution: Avoid attempting to cross closed roads or flooded bridges, and adhere to all safety advisories issued by park authorities.
For tourists needing to postpone their bookings due to the floods, SANParks offers options for immediate date changes or credits to use at a later date. This flexibility aims to accommodate visitors affected by the unforeseen weather conditions.
