Eskom
By Karabo Marifi
Eskom has achieved a significant milestone, reaching 296 consecutive days without implementing loadshedding since 26 March 2024. This accomplishment underscores the effectiveness of Eskom’s Generation Operational Recovery Plan and the enhanced performance of key power stations, notably Koeberg and Kriel.
Koeberg Nuclear Power Station Enhancements
A pivotal development contributing to this stability is the successful synchronisation of Unit 2 at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station to the national grid on 30 December 2024. This synchronisation follows an extensive Long-Term Operation (LTO) programme aimed at extending the unit’s operational lifespan by an additional 20 years. The maintenance for Unit 2 included the replacement of three steam generators, comprehensive inspections, and refuelling activities to ensure the reactor’s continued safe and efficient performance.
Currently, efforts are underway to ramp up Unit 2 to its full capacity of 930MW, with expectations to reach full load by mid-January 2025, provided each step meets commissioning procedures. Combined, Units 1 and 2 will supply 1,860MW—approximately 5% of South Africa’s total electricity—playing a vital role in reducing loadshedding and stabilising the grid.
Kriel Power Station’s Role in Grid Stability
The Kriel Power Station has also contributed to Eskom’s improved grid stability. Notably, two generating units at Kriel were returned to service, bolstering the available generation capacity. These efforts are part of Eskom’s broader strategy to enhance the reliability of its generation fleet, ensuring a consistent electricity supply to meet the nation’s demand.
Operational Highlights and Diesel Savings
The sustained suspension of loadshedding has resulted in significant operational efficiencies. Eskom reports year-to-date diesel savings of R16.42 billion, approximately 62.9% less than the R26.09 billion spent during the same period last year. This reduction is attributed to the decreased reliance on Open-Cycle Gas Turbines (OCGTs), as improved power station performance has lessened the need for supplementary diesel-powered generation.
Energy Availability Factor (EAF) Improvements
Eskom’s Energy Availability Factor (EAF) has shown notable improvement. The year-to-date EAF stands at 62.17%, a significant increase from 55.17% during the same period last year. This enhancement reflects Eskom’s commitment to maintaining and upgrading its infrastructure to ensure a reliable power supply.
Impact on the Mining Sector
The improved energy availability has positively impacted various sectors, including mining. The Minerals Council South Africa notes that the increased EAF has alleviated electricity constraints on mining operations, allowing for more consistent production schedules. However, the council also highlights that while electricity availability has improved, affordability remains a critical issue affecting the competitiveness and profitability of South Africa’s mining sector.
Future Outlook
Eskom remains optimistic about sustaining this positive trajectory. The utility is on track to meet or exceed its March 2025 EAF target of 70%, aiming to further enhance grid stability and reduce the likelihood of loadshedding. Ongoing maintenance and strategic investments in infrastructure are central to achieving these objectives, ensuring that Eskom can continue to meet the country’s electricity demands effectively.
