Thulasizwe Buthelezi traditional Prime Minister of the Zulu nation
King Misuzulu KaZwelithini marked history during the recent commemoration of the Battle of Isandlwana as he announced Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, as the new traditional Prime Minister of the Zulu nation. The significant announcement took place in the historical setting of Nquthu, in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday, casting a monumental decision amidst the ceremonies that hold deep cultural significance for the Zulu people.
Reverend Buthelezi is set to take over the prestigious role following the passing of the revered Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi in September 2023. The late Prince Mangosuthu was the third traditional prime minister from the distinguished Buthelezi clan, preceded by his great grandfather Mnyamana kaNgqengelele Buthelezi and his father Inkosi Mathole Buthelezi. Continuing the familial legacy, Reverend Thulasizwe becomes the fourth representative from the Buthelezi lineage to hold this influential office.
In a move that wards off political implications, King Misuzulu emphasized the personal nature of his decision. Addressing any concerns regarding the process of appointment, King Misuzulu declared, “I heard that there were people who were saying appointing a traditional prime minister must be a royal house decision, actually it is the king’s decision.” Ensuring the continuity of Prince Mangosuthu’s work and upholding the vision he had for the Zulu nation were pivotal elements in the King’s choice. “I appointed a new traditional prime minister because he worked with the late traditional prime minister Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, and he knows what the late prime minister’s vision about the Zulu nation,” said King Misuzulu.
Rev. Thulasizwe’s appointment is not only a continuation of a dynastic tradition but also a testament to his service and dedication to the Zulu nation, having collaborated closely with his predecessor. His experience and understanding of the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s objectives for the people serve as crucial qualifications for his newly appointed role.
Inkosi Phathisizwe Chiliza of the Amadunge Clan was appointed as the deputy prime minister, placing him in a critical position to support the new traditional prime minister.
