King Misuzulu won’t attend Nedbank Cup Final
By Sello Masilo
King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has officially withdrawn from attending the highly anticipated Nedbank Cup Final between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, scheduled for Saturday, 10 May 2025, at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. The decision, announced on 9 May 2025, stems from concerns over inadequate security arrangements and ceremonial preparations.
In a formal letter addressed to Premier Soccer League (PSL) Acting Chief Executive Officer Mato Madlala, Squire Arnold Nododile, Chief Director in the Private Office of His Majesty, stated:
“Following correspondence dated 6 May 2025 regarding the proposed participation of His Majesty King Misuzulu kaZwelithini in the Nedbank Cup Final scheduled for 10 May 2025, this serves as formal notice that the King’s attendance will no longer proceed.
Royal engagements of this nature require a clear line of coordination and confirmation to allow for the necessary administrative, security, and ceremonial preparations. Given the absence of formal response or acknowledgment from your office, the Private Office has assessed that adequate time no longer remains to implement the required protocols and logistics to the standard expected of a royal appearance at a public event of this scale.
The decision to withdraw is based solely on these practical considerations. It is the responsibility of the Private Office to uphold the integrity, safety, and stature of His Majesty’s engagements, and such standards cannot be compromised.
This communication concludes the matter.
With the highest respect and appreciation.”
The King’s withdrawal adds to the challenges surrounding the event, which has already faced significant issues due to a ticketing system failure. Over 10,000 additional tickets were sold beyond the stadium’s capacity, leading to widespread frustration among fans and necessitating refunds for affected ticket holders .
In response to the ticketing fiasco and potential security concerns, KwaZulu-Natal police have announced enhanced security measures for the match. Deputy Police Commissioner Major General Phumelele Makoba emphasized that strict access control will be enforced, and only individuals with valid match-day tickets will be allowed near the stadium. Law enforcement agencies have also addressed threats circulating on social media, assuring the public that any attempts to disrupt the event will be met with decisive action .
The PSL has acknowledged the ticketing issues, attributing them to a system glitch that allowed sales beyond the stadium’s capacity. Efforts are underway to process refunds and manage the situation to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all attendees .
