Kenya Government Debunks Rumours
By Mpho Moloi
Recent social media discussions have speculated about an executive order relocating Kenya’s capital from Nairobi to Nakuru. Despite widespread online sharing, the government has clarified that no such executive order exists, debunking the claim as false information. Some individuals suggested alternative locations like Kajiado for a capital move, but these remain speculative.
In November 2023, President William Ruto issued Executive Order No. 2 of 2023, detailing the organisation of the government. This document, however, does not mention any plans to relocate the capital city.
The idea of moving Kenya’s capital is not new. In 2007, the Architectural Association of Kenya recommended shifting the capital from Nairobi, citing that the city’s master plan had expired and was inadequate for its growth. Additionally, in 2022, experts suggested relocating the political capital to Isiolo, positioning Nairobi as a financial hub similar to New York or Dubai.
Despite these discussions, the government has not taken any official steps toward relocating the capital. Nairobi remains the political and administrative centre of Kenya. The recent rumours about an executive order moving the capital to Nakuru are unfounded.
It’s essential for the public to verify information from credible sources before sharing it to prevent the spread of misinformation. The government continues to focus on Nairobi’s development to address challenges such as congestion and infrastructure strain.
In December 2021, Nakuru was elevated to city status, becoming Kenya’s fourth city after Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu. This development has spurred growth in Nakuru, but there are no official plans to make it the capital.
In conclusion, Nairobi remains Kenya’s capital, and any claims of its relocation to Nakuru or other towns are baseless. The public is urged to rely on official communications for accurate information.
