The festival, which celebrates its 5th Birthday this year, is set to take place on August 12, 2023, at Emmarentia Botanical Gardens. With an all-star lineup featuring Sjava, Pabi Cooper, Kabza De Small, Mafikizolo, and more to be announced, the festival promises to be a fantastic event for all attendees.
The decision to cancel Khumalo’s appearance was made in light of ongoing developments in the Senzo Meyiwa case, as highlighted by the hashtag #SenzoMeyiwaTrial. The organizers have expressed their concern regarding various comments on social media platforms and calls from patrons of the festival.
While they respect the legal processes and acknowledge Khumalo’s presumption of innocence, they believe it is in the best interest of the festival to relieve her of her obligations and allow her and her team the necessary time to address the issues arising from the current court proceedings.
The developments in the Senzo Meyiwa case are intriguing. Analyst Colonel Lambertus Steyn, from the SAPS Cold Case Unit, recently testified in the Gauteng North High Court in Pretoria. He stated that cellphone records indicated that Khumalo had been in contact with one of the men accused of murdering Senzo Meyiwa.
It was found that at least two phone calls had taken place between Khumalo and accused five, Ntuli, on August 2, 2014, and October 15, 2014. Additionally, it was revealed that Khumalo’s phone had been rebooted at 1:31 am, just hours after Meyiwa’s tragic death.
The decision to remove Khumalo from the festival lineup shows that the organizers take the allegations and ongoing legal proceedings seriously. By making this tough decision, they are prioritizing the integrity and reputation of the event itself. It also allows Khumalo and her team the necessary space to address these serious allegations. The festival will continue to showcase a star-studded lineup and provide a family-friendly environment where attendees can enjoy music, food, and beverages.
As the Tribute to Women festival approaches, the anticipation grows and the focus shifts to the artists who will light up the stage. With Sjava, Pabi Cooper, Kabza De Small, Mafikizolo, and more yet to be announced, this year’s festival promises to be a triumphant celebration of women and their contributions.
