Kaden Francis’ Late Strike
By Sello Masilo
Cape Town City returned to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Chippa United in the Betway Premiership encounter at Buffalo City Stadium in East London on Saturday evening.
A late goal earned the Citizens their first away win of the season in the league, elevating them to 10th spot in the standings. Coach Eric Tinkler’s side will aim to secure back-to-back wins when they host AmaZulu FC on 29 December. The Chilli Boys, meanwhile, remained fifth after recording their fourth league defeat of the season. Coach Kwanele Kopo will look to guide Chippa back to winning ways when they face Kaizer Chiefs away on 29 December.
The first half saw both teams struggle to find the target. Prins Tjiueza, returning from suspension, struck the woodwork 11 minutes into the match. At the other end, Sixonolo Kwayiba, who scored twice in Chippa’s recent 2-0 win over Magesi FC, missed the target in the 38th minute, leaving the score 0-0 at halftime.
The Citizens were more assertive after the restart, creating better chances. Chippa goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was called into action in the 55th minute, denying Gabriel Amato. However, Nwabali was beaten in the 82nd minute when Kayden Francis netted at the near post with a deflected strike. City then held on to their slender lead, securing a hard-fought 1-0 win.
