Kaizer Chiefs
By Thabo Mosia
Kaizer Chiefs have won the 2024-25 DStv Diski Challenge League title with one match to spare following Saturday’s commanding 3-0 victory over Magesi FC at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto. This triumph marks their first title in this prestigious youth football competition in a decade, a milestone that has sparked celebrations among fans and showcased the club’s resurgence in developing young talent.
A Match to Remember: Chiefs Dominate Magesi FC
The title-clinching match against Magesi FC was a display of skill and determination from the young Amakhosi squad. Imaad Hendricks got the party started, scoring a brilliant goal in the 36th minute to give Chiefs a 1-0 lead at halftime. The second half saw Nkosana Mbuthu light up the scoreboard with a stunning strike, before Thulani Mabaso sealed the deal with a goal just six minutes from the end, wrapping up a 3-0 win.
This victory pushed Kaizer Chiefs to 67 points in the league standings, a total no other team can reach with just one match left in the season. Their dominance was clear, with 20 wins, 4 draws, and only 2 losses from 26 matches, alongside an impressive goal difference of +39 after scoring 55 goals and conceding just 16.
Disciplinary Boost Paves the Way
The road to the title wasn’t without its twists. On Thursday, ahead of the Magesi FC clash, Chiefs received a major boost when the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Disciplinary Committee awarded them three points. This came after Chippa United failed to honour a scheduled fixture against Chiefs on 1 February 2025. The match was officially handed to Amakhosi with a 3-0 scoreline, adding crucial points to their tally and setting them up perfectly for Saturday’s win.
This decision proved to be a turning point, giving Chiefs the momentum they needed to secure the title early. It also highlighted the challenges faced by struggling teams like Chippa United, who sit at the bottom of the log with just 13 points from 26 matches, having won only 2 games all season.
Ending a 10-Year Drought
For Kaizer Chiefs, this victory is more than just a trophy—it’s the end of a 10-year wait for DStv Diski Challenge glory. The competition, a vital platform for youth football in South Africa, has seen several clubs etch their names into its history. Golden Arrows, Mamelodi Sundowns, University of Pretoria, Bloemfontein Celtic, SuperSport United, and Stellenbosch FC have all lifted the title before, and now Chiefs proudly join this elite group.
The win is a testament to the club’s renewed focus on its youth academy, which has faced tough times in recent years. Fans see this as a sign of better days ahead, not just for the youth team but for the senior squad as well.
A Grand Finale Awaits
The celebrations won’t stop with the Magesi FC win. Next weekend, Kaizer Chiefs will play their final match of the season against AmaZulu FC. They’ll be welcomed onto the pitch with a guard of honour, a traditional gesture of respect for champions, before being officially crowned the 2024-25 DStv Diski Challenge winners. It’s set to be a proud moment for the players, coaches, and supporters alike.
What the Diski Challenge Means for South African Football
The DStv Diski Challenge isn’t just another league—it’s a launchpad for South Africa’s future football stars. Sponsored by DStv and run by the PSL, this under-23 competition gives young players a chance to shine, with many going on to play in the senior DStv Premiership. For Chiefs, this title proves their academy is producing talent capable of competing at the highest level.
The league’s slogan, “Sisaz’ Phakama” (Rise Up in isiZulu), captures its spirit perfectly. It’s about inspiring young footballers to chase their dreams, and Chiefs have embodied that this season with their consistent performances and never-say-die attitude.
Standout Stars and Team Spirit
While the whole squad played a role in this success, a few names stood out in the Magesi FC match. Imaad Hendricks, Nkosana Mbuthu, and Thulani Mabaso were the heroes on the day, but the title was a true team effort. The coaching staff deserves praise too, for guiding these youngsters with smart tactics and a winning mindset.
Beyond the stats, it’s the teamwork and passion that have carried Chiefs to the top. Their ability to stay focused, even with the title in sight, shows a maturity beyond their years.
How the League Shapes Up
A look at the 2024-25 DStv Diski Challenge log table tells the story of Chiefs’ dominance. With 64 points before the awarded points, they’ve left second-placed Stellenbosch FC in their dust. Stellenbosch, despite a solid season with 19 wins and 60 points, couldn’t keep up after a 3-0 loss to Marumo Gallants on the same day Chiefs won.
Other big names like Mamelodi Sundowns (54 points), Orlando Pirates (47 points), and SuperSport United (45 points) round out the top five, but none came close to challenging Chiefs. At the other end, Chippa United’s dismal season—2 wins, 7 draws, 17 losses, and a -37 goal difference—shows just how tough the competition can be.
New Faces and Fresh Hope
This title win shines a spotlight on some exciting new talent. Players like Hendricks and Mbuthu are names to watch, with fans already buzzing about their potential to break into the senior team. The academy’s success could also attract more young hopefuls to Chiefs, strengthening their pipeline for years to come.
Off the pitch, the club’s youth setup has faced criticism in the past for not delivering results. This victory silences those doubts and proves that hard work and investment in the next generation can pay off.
