Kaizer Chiefs Nasreddine Nabi
By Thabo Mosia
Kaizer Chiefs have officially introduced Nasreddine Nabi as their new head coach. The 58-year-old Tunisian, renowned for his tactical acumen and success in African football, met the squad for the first time on Sunday. The announcement brings much-anticipated relief to Amakhosi fans yearning for a return to the glory days.

A Warm Welcome
Kaizer Chiefs released an emotive video featuring Nabi addressing the team during a training session, accompanied by a warm message from the club: “We are delighted to welcome Coach Nasreddine Nabi to the Kaizer Chiefs family. We are happy to have you with us, Coach.” This formal introduction concludes weeks of speculation linking the Tunisian to the top role at Naturena.
Nabi’s arrival follows his departure from Moroccan side AS FAR Rabat, where he narrowly lost the Throne Cup final to Raja Casablanca, managed by Josef Zinnbauer. Despite the setback, Nabi’s credentials remain impressive, having also guided Tanzanian giants Young Africans (Yanga) to remarkable success.
A Challenging Task Ahead
Taking over from interim coach Cavin Johnson, Nabi faces the daunting challenge of ending Kaizer Chiefs’ nine-year trophy drought—the longest in the club’s storied history. During this period, arch-rivals Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns have amassed numerous titles, adding to the pressure on the new coach.
Nabi’s previous stint at Yanga saw him clinch two league titles and lead the team to the final of the CAF Confederation Cup in the 2022-23 season. Although they lost to USM Alger on away goals, Nabi’s ability to compete on the continental stage has not gone unnoticed.
The Transition Period
Due to the logistical constraints following his tenure in Morocco, Nabi was unable to join the team on their recent trip to Turkey. Nonetheless, he has been proactive, sending members of his technical team ahead to assess the squad in preparation for the upcoming season.
In a video posted by the club on Saturday evening, sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr. was seen with Nabi during a training session, further demonstrating the club’s commitment to supporting their new coach.
The Path Forward
Amakhosi ended the 2023-24 DStv Premiership season in a disappointing 10th place, underlining the need for a fresh strategic approach. With Nabi at the helm, the club hopes to overturn their recent fortunes and emulate past successes. His arrival has rekindled hopes among the Khosi faithful, who are eager to see their team challenge for honours once again.
While the specifics of Nabi’s mandate remain undisclosed, the expectation is clear: bring silverware back to Naturena. The hope is that a cup victory in his first season could endear him to the fanbase and signify the start of a new era.
Reinforcements Incoming
Nabi is not coming alone; reports suggest he will introduce five new technical staff members to bolster the existing setup at Kaizer Chiefs. Among them is Fernando da Cruz, a 51-year-old Frenchman with extensive experience, including managing Lille’s youth and reserve teams. Having previously worked as a scout and caretaker for Lille’s senior team, Da Cruz’s role will be pivotal in the rejuvenation efforts.
Nasreddine Nabi: A Glimpse at His Career
Before his stint with AS FAR Rabat, Nabi enjoyed significant success with Young Africans in Tanzania. Under his leadership, Yanga clinched back-to-back league titles and advanced to the CAF Confederation Cup final. His tactical prowess and winning mentality make him a promising addition to the Chiefs’ coaching staff.
The Road Ahead
As the Glamour Boys embark on their preseason in Turkey, they are expected to face stiff competition from top teams, providing an early test for Nabi’s strategies and squad management. The forthcoming matches will offer a glimpse into the potential transformation under his stewardship.
Nabi’s appointment may have been an open secret, but his impact on the club’s future is yet to be revealed. With the 2024-25 season on the horizon, all eyes will be on Kaizer Chiefs as they aim to reclaim their status as the most successful club in South African
