Kaizer Chiefs vs Stellenbosch FC
By Sello Masilo
Kaizer Chiefs Secure 2-0 Victory Over 10-Man Stellenbosch FC in Betway Premiership Opener. Kaizer Chiefs kicked off their 2025/26 Betway Premiership campaign with a solid 2-0 win against a determined but reduced Stellenbosch FC at Athlone Stadium on Sunday evening, even without head coach Nasreddine Nabi on the sidelines due to a family emergency.
Amakhosi Start Strong Despite Coach’s Absence
Kaizer Chiefs, fondly known as Amakhosi, began the new season on a high note, claiming three points in their opening match against Stellenbosch FC. The Soweto giants were without their head coach, Nasreddine Nabi, who had to rush back to Tunisia after a serious accident involving his wife at home. Nabi flew out on Friday evening to be with his family during this tough time, leaving assistant coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze to guide the team. Despite the setback, Chiefs showed grit and took full advantage of playing against 10 men for most of the game, marking a perfect start to what fans hope will be a turnaround season after recent struggles.
This victory extends Chiefs’ strong record against Stellenbosch, making it their fifth straight win over the Cape side in league matches. For Stellenbosch, or Stellies as they are called, this was their first loss of the campaign. They had started brightly by beating AmaZulu FC in the MTN8 quarter-finals the previous weekend, showing their growing strength under coach Steve Barker. Barker, however, felt the early red card changed the game, saying his team played better after going down to 10 men but rued the penalty that sealed their fate.
The match at Athlone Stadium was sold out, with fans packing the stands for this exciting opener in the Betway Premiership, South Africa’s top football league. Chiefs now sit among the early leaders, while Stellies will look to bounce back quickly.
Early Drama Sets the Tone
From the first whistle, Chiefs put pressure on Stellenbosch’s defence, pushing high and creating chances. The game’s turning point came in the 13th minute when Stellenbosch debutant Siviwe Nkwali was shown a straight red card for denying Mduduzi Shabalala a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Nkwali, who had just joined Stellies, brought down Shabalala as he raced towards goal, leaving referee Sikhumbuzo Gasa no choice but to send him off. This reduced the hosts to 10 players for the remaining 77 minutes, giving Chiefs a big edge in numbers.
Chiefs made the most of their advantage just two minutes later. In the 15th minute, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo stepped up for a free-kick and curled a stunning shot into the net, leaving goalkeeper Sage Stephens with no chance. It was Ngcobo’s eighth league goal for Chiefs and the first direct free-kick goal for the team in two seasons. The crowd erupted as the ball nestled into the corner, a moment of magic that set Chiefs on their way. At halftime, Amakhosi led 1-0, controlling the play but knowing Stellies could still fight back.
Second Half Fightback and Missed Chances
After the break, Stellenbosch showed bravery, attacking in numbers despite being a man down. Barker made changes, bringing on players like Langelihle Khanyi, Genino Palace, and others to add energy. This left them open at the back, and Chiefs had several chances to extend their lead. In the 67th minute, young forward Wandile Duba missed a sitter, failing to convert a close-range opportunity. Seven minutes later, Glody Lilepo also fluffed a golden chance in the 74th minute, shooting wide when it seemed easier to score.
Chiefs kept pushing in the closing stages, and their efforts paid off in stoppage time. In the 90th minute plus six, substitute Ashley Du Preez was fouled in the box by Omega Mdaka, earning a penalty. Lilepo, the DR Congo international, calmly stepped up and slotted the ball home, sealing a 2-0 win. It was Lilepo’s second goal against Stellenbosch, both away from home, and a cool finish under pressure. Aden McCarthy was named Betway Man of the Match for his solid display in defence.
Team Lineups and Substitutions
Stellenbosch FC: Stephens, Moloisane, Enyinnaya, Nkwali, Mdaka, Butsaka (Jabaar 62’), Palace, Barns (Mcaba 71’), Cupido (Khanyi 62’), De Jong (Nku 62’), Titus (Lekoloane 71’).
Kaizer Chiefs: Petersen, Cross, McCarthy, Miguel, Monyane, Cele (Ndlovu 75’), Ngcobo (Mthethwa 46’), Shabalala (Sirino 75’), Duba (Vilakazi 81’), Lilepo, Hlongwane (Du Preez 57’).
These lineups highlight Chiefs’ mix of experience and youth, with players like Ngcobo and Lilepo stepping up. For Stellies, the early red card forced Barker to adjust, but they held firm until the late penalty.
Player Spotlights and Performances
Nkosingiphile Ngcobo was the star of the show with his brilliant free-kick, a goal already in contention for the Betway Premiership Goal of the Month. The midfielder, back from injury, showed why he’s key to Chiefs’ attack. Glody Lilepo redeemed his earlier miss with the penalty, proving his value as a forward. On the Stellies side, goalkeeper Sage Stephens made several saves, but the red card to Nkwali on his debut was a harsh blow.
Assistant coach Ben Youssef praised the team’s spirit, saying it was one of the sweetest wins, sending a message to rivals like Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates. Barker, while disappointed, noted his team’s resilience after the red card.
Broader Context in the Betway Premiership
This result puts Chiefs in a good spot early in the 2025/26 season, which kicked off over the weekend with several surprises. Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns drew 1-1 with Chippa United, while Orlando Pirates lost 1-0 to Sekhukhune United. Siwelele FC topped the log after a 3-1 win over Golden Arrows, and newcomers like Magesi FC held Polokwane City to a 0-0 draw. The league, sponsored by Betway, promises excitement with promoted teams like Orbit College FC and Durban City adding fresh competition.
