Cavin Johnson has parted ways with Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs have announced the “parting of ways with their Head of Academy, Cavin Johnson,” who had joined the club in September 2023.

Official Statement from Kaizer Chiefs

In an official statement, the club expressed their gratitude towards Johnson: “The departure is part of the restructuring process that the Club is undertaking. We wish to thank Mr. Johnson for his contribution to Kaizer Chiefs and wish him well in the future.”

A Brief Tenure Met with Challenges

Initially brought in as Head of Development, Johnson was later roped in as interim coach following a series of disappointing results that led to the dismissal of then-head coach Molefi Ntseki. Ntseki’s exit came after a disastrous Carling Knockout Cup loss to AmaZulu, compounded by fan unrest and objects being thrown at him during matches.

A Tough Interim Period for Johnson

Johnson’s tenure as interim coach, however, saw the club spiral further into turmoil. Under his leadership, Chiefs faced an unprecedented series of setbacks, culminating in their worst league finish ever—10th place. This performance led to a chorus of dissatisfaction from the fans, who were vocal in their calls for his removal from the club, despite assurances from management that he would not assume the role of head coach.

Future Changes and Restructuring at Kaizer Chiefs

The club, known as the Glamour Boys, are anticipated to make significant overhauls to their technical setup, with speculation rife that a new head coach will bring his own team of support staff. Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr indicated in April, during a media interaction at Luke Fleurs’ memorial at FNB Stadium, that the club is committed “to having a different technical structure next season.”

Who Is Cavin Johnson?

Cavin Johnson is a seasoned football coach with a rich history in South African football. Before his stint with Kaizer Chiefs, Johnson built an impressive portfolio, serving as head coach for several prominent clubs including Platinum Stars, SuperSport United, and AmaZulu. Known for his tactical acumen and player development skills, Johnson has had a mixed bag of successes and challenges throughout his coaching career.

Career Achievements

Over his extensive career, Johnson has been credited with turning around team performances and nurturing young talent. His tenure at Platinum Stars was particularly noteworthy; he led the team to a commendable second-place finish in the 2012–2013 Premier Soccer League season. Under his guidance, several young players flourished, making a mark both domestically and internationally.

Coaching Philosophy

Johnson’s coaching philosophy revolves around disciplined team structure and tactical flexibility. He places a significant emphasis on youth development, which made his initial role at Kaizer Chiefs—head of their academy—a seemingly perfect fit. His tactical adjustments and player-focused strategies are well-regarded, although his interim period at Chiefs suggests that even the best plans can sometimes falter under challenging circumstances.

What Lies Ahead for Kaizer Chiefs?

As Kaizer Chiefs prepare for the next season, all eyes will be on the new technical setup and the arrival of the anticipated new head coach. The restructuring aims to revitalise the team’s strategies and bring in fresh perspectives, hopefully ushering in a period of renewed success for the Amakhosi.
