In a surprising turn of events just ahead of the 2024/2025 season, Kaizer Chiefs have announced that assistant coach Fernando Da Cruz has left the club to take up a new role with the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF). The 52-year-old Frenchman had only joined Amakhosi in July 2024, forming part of head coach Nasreddine Nabi’s technical team. Da Cruz’s departure comes just days before Kaizer Chiefs’ season opener against Marumo Gallants, adding to the club’s challenges as they navigate the new campaign.

Kaizer Chiefs confirmed the departure via an official statement, with Da Cruz expressing gratitude to the club, its chairman, and supporters. “I would like to thank Kaizer Chiefs, Chairman and all the supporters for the welcome and affection they gave from the first day I landed in South Africa,” Da Cruz said. The club also extended their thanks, acknowledging his contributions during his brief time with the team and fully supporting his decision to take on this new opportunity .

The move comes as Da Cruz joins the FRMF’s OCP Group project, a strategic initiative aimed at developing youth football and professionalizing training centers across Morocco. Da Cruz will be working closely with former national team coach Fathi Jamal in this ambitious endeavour .

Kaizer Chiefs’ pre-season preparations included a training camp in Turkey, where Da Cruz was part of the technical team. However, his sudden departure means that head coach Nasreddine Nabi will now need to adjust his coaching setup as the club gears up for the upcoming Betway Premiership season .

This development poses significant challenges for Kaizer Chiefs as they enter the new season, but the club remains optimistic, bolstered by the return of key players such as Dillan Solomons, Tebogo Potsane, and Bongani Sam, who have all recovered from injuries . The team’s supporters will be keen to see how the club adapts to these changes, both in the technical staff and on the pitch, as they aim for a successful 2024/2025 season.
