Kaizer Chiefs
By Sello Masilo
Kaizer Chiefs have officially announced the signing of experienced midfielder Thabo Cele, marking a significant addition to their squad. The 28-year-old has inked a three-and-a-half-year contract with Amakhosi, which includes an option for an additional year.
Born in KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal, Cele embarked on his international football journey in 2016, playing for clubs such as Real SC, Benfica, and Cova Piedade in Portugal. He later moved to Poland to join Radomiak and most recently played for Russian side Fakel Voronezh. His extensive overseas experience is expected to bring valuable expertise to the Kaizer Chiefs’ midfield.
Cele has also donned the national jersey, representing South Africa at various junior levels, including U20 and U23, and has earned caps for the senior team, Bafana Bafana. His return to South African football is anticipated to bolster the domestic league’s competitiveness.
Kaizer Chiefs’ Sporting Director, Kaizer Motaung Jr., expressed his enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, “It’s been a long time coming for Thabo, and we are both glad that he’s finally here. We know his quality and we are looking forward to his contribution to the squad as we continue to build.”
Cele is expected to join his new teammates this week, marking the beginning of his journey in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) with the Glamour Boys. The club and its supporters are optimistic that his international experience and midfield prowess will significantly contribute to their campaign.
