Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns

Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns battled to a tense 0-0 draw in their Betway Premiership clash at a packed FNB Stadium on Wednesday night, preserving their unbeaten records but seeing Chiefs drop points for the first time this season.
The highly anticipated encounter, which drew a massive crowd of over 74,000 fans, lived up to its billing as a feisty affair filled with intense moments, solid defending, and missed opportunities on both sides. Played under the bright lights of Johannesburg’s iconic Calabash, the match kicked off 15 minutes late at 19:45 to allow for the influx of supporters, creating an electric atmosphere with pyrotechnics and a countdown timer adding to the excitement. Both teams showed mutual respect early on, leading to a cautious start that gradually built into a physical battle, with frequent fouls disrupting the flow and testing the referee’s patience.
From the outset, Mamelodi Sundowns, known as the Brazilians, looked comfortable in possession, controlling 68% of the ball in the first half alone. They probed Chiefs’ defence patiently, building from the back under the guidance of new coach Miguel Cardoso. The Tshwane giants created the first clear chance in the ninth minute when Tashreeq Matthews latched onto a clever looping pass from Arthur Sales, only to poke the ball just over the crossbar from close range. This early threat set the tone for Sundowns’ approach, relying on quick transitions and long-range efforts to break down Chiefs’ stubborn backline.
Kaizer Chiefs, dubbed Amakhosi or the Glamour Boys, adopted a more pragmatic strategy under coach Nasreddine Nabi. They sat deep initially, absorbing pressure and waiting for counter-attacking opportunities. Players like Glody Lilepo (also known as Makabi Lilepo) and Pule Mmodi lurked dangerously, ready to pounce on any misplaced passes from Sundowns. Despite their swift breaks, Chiefs struggled to convert these moments into goals in the opening 20 minutes. Wandile Duba, making a lively impression with his relentless pressing, won back possession high up the pitch multiple times, disrupting Sundowns’ rhythm.
A standout moment came in the 11th minute when debutant Paseka Mako delivered a pinpoint cross from the left flank, finding Duba whose header forced a sharp save from Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. Four minutes later, Lilepo burst down the right side and whipped in a low cross, but it was cleared by Sundowns defender Malibongwe Khoza just in time. In the 18th minute, Duba’s harrying led to Sibongiseni Mthethwa firing a shot from outside the box, but it sailed over the bar.
The game’s intensity ramped up around the half-hour mark. In the 37th minute, Lilepo unleashed a powerful long-range knuckleball shot that dipped viciously, forcing Williams to make an acrobatic save, tipping it over the bar and leaving the 75,000-strong crowd in awe as the goalkeeper wagged his finger in celebration. At the other end, Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen proved equally heroic, diving full-length to deny Teboho Mokoena’s effort from distance two minutes later. Duba picked up a yellow card in the 42nd minute for a mistimed challenge, adding to the physical edge of the contest. Despite Sundowns’ dominance in possession—ending the match with 64% overall—they created few clear-cut chances, with Iqraam Rayners and Matthews trying their luck from range, only to be thwarted by Petersen.
The teams went into halftime goalless, with the score reflecting a balanced but uneventful first 45 minutes. Chiefs had 36% possession but looked sharper in transitions, while Sundowns’ build-up play lacked the final punch.
The second half mirrored the first in many ways, with Sundowns continuing to probe from their own half and Chiefs seeking breaks. After the hour mark, Amakhosi grew in confidence and appeared likelier to score, often forcing Sundowns to backpedal into their own territory. Substitutions injected fresh energy: Chiefs brought on Ashley du Preez for Duba in the 60th minute, followed by Njabulo Ndlovu and Gaston Sirino replacing Samkelo Cele and Mduduzi Shabalala in the 67th minute. Sundowns responded with Aubrey Modiba coming on for Fawaaz Basadien in the 56th minute, and later a triple change in the 71st minute—Siyabonga Mabena, Zuko Mdunyelwa, and Lebo Mothiba for Matthews, Thapelo Morena, and Rayners—plus Bathusi Aubaas for Mokoena in the 76th minute.
Notable chances included Arthur Sales grazing Petersen’s post with a long-range strike in the 59th minute, and Pule Mmodi cutting in from the left in the 77th minute to force another save from Williams. Chiefs kept testing Williams from distance, with Lilepo’s 30-yard free kick dipping just too late and Mthethwa’s well-struck shot in stoppage time held firmly by the keeper. Sundowns had little to offer in the closing stages, their possession yielding minimal threats as Chiefs’ high press and defensive solidity shone through.
The match ended 0-0 after four minutes of added time, with the referee’s final whistle met by a mix of frustration and applause from the sold-out stadium. Sibongiseni Mthethwa was named Betway Man of the Match for his commanding midfield display, breaking up plays and contributing to attacks.
This result extends Kaizer Chiefs’ unbeaten run to four matches in the Betway Premiership, accumulating 10 points—two games faster than last season—and marking their fourth consecutive clean sheet, a feat not achieved since 1979. Petersen celebrated his fifth straight clean sheet, a personal milestone. For Mamelodi Sundowns, the defending champions, it was their second draw in four games, highlighting an uncharacteristic lack of rhythm amid recent off-field boardroom drama and their MTN8 semi-final exit. Tactically, Chiefs’ high-pressing game disrupted Sundowns’ usual possession dominance, exposing the need for a stronger midfield conductor in the Brazilians’ setup, leading to a back-and-forth style that lacked control.
In the broader context of the evening’s fixtures, other Betway Premiership results included Sekhukhune United drawing 1-1 with AmaZulu and Golden Arrows defeating Magesi 2-1, shaking up the early league standings. Fans and analysts noted Chiefs’ progress under Nabi, with improved composure and defensive resilience, though clinical finishing remains an area for growth. Sundowns, despite their star-studded squad, appeared fortunate to escape with a point, as Chiefs created the better chances overall.
