Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town City Settle for Goalless Draw in Betway Premiership Clash

Betway Premiership

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA – Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town City played out a goalless draw in their Betway Premiership encounter at FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening. The stalemate highlighted both teams’ struggles in front of goal, with Amakhosi managing just one win in their last four league matches, while the Citizens extended their winless run to nine games across all competitions.

Despite a spirited second-half performance from Chiefs, they were unable to break down Cape Town City’s resolute defense. The result sees Chiefs remain in eighth place on the log, while City sits in tenth, six points adrift of their opponents after playing an extra match.

First-Half Action: Missed Opportunities at Both Ends

The match kicked off with Cape Town City asserting themselves early on, controlling possession and pressing high up the pitch. Their efforts almost paid off in the 10th minute when a well-delivered corner found defender Nathan Fasika in the six-yard box, but his powerful header was expertly saved by Chiefs’ goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma.

Kaizer Chiefs gradually grew into the game, with their first real attempt coming midway through the first half. Mduduzi Shabalala unleashed a tame shot from the edge of the area, which was comfortably gathered by City’s veteran goalkeeper Darren Keet.

The home side’s best chance of the half came in the 40th minute. Dillon Solomons was released by a defense-splitting pass from Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, but his low shot whizzed past the far post. Chiefs had another golden opportunity just two minutes later when Shabalala intercepted a poor touch from Fasika, found himself one-on-one with Keet, but scuffed his shot wide.

At halftime, the scoreboard remained blank, with both teams lacking the cutting edge to convert their chances.

Second Half: Chiefs Dominate but Fail to Capitalise

Both coaches made tactical changes at the start of the second half. George Matlou replaced Ngcobo for Chiefs, while City introduced Prins Tijueza to bolster their midfield.

City nearly grabbed the lead just after the hour mark when Fortune Makaringe surged into the penalty area and fired a low shot toward the bottom corner. However, Bvuma produced a stunning left-footed save to deny the visitors.

Chiefs responded with increased intensity. In the 78th minute, Pule Mmodi delivered a precise cross from the left wing to substitute Ranga Chivaviro, but the striker’s header went over the bar. Chiefs continued to press, and in the 87th minute, Mmodi cut inside and curled a shot toward the top corner, only for Keet to make a spectacular diving save to keep the score level.

Despite Amakhosi’s dominance in the final stages, Cape Town City held firm, securing a valuable point away from home.

Post-Match Reactions: Coaches Reflect on Performance

Speaking after the match, Kaizer Chiefs’ head coach expressed frustration at his side’s inability to convert their dominance into goals:

“We created chances, but our finishing let us down. It’s something we need to improve on because we cannot afford to keep dropping points in games we should be winning.”

Cape Town City’s Muhsin Ertugral, meanwhile, praised his team’s defensive effort:

“We knew Chiefs would come at us, especially in the second half, but I am proud of how my players defended. A point away from home is always a good result.”

What This Means for the League Table

The draw leaves Kaizer Chiefs in eighth place with [updated points tally], while Cape Town City remains in tenth, six points behind Chiefs with an extra game played. With the league reaching a critical phase, both teams will need to turn their fortunes around to remain in contention for a top-six finish.

Upcoming Fixtures

• Cape Town City will return to action on Saturday, 15 March, when they host Marumo Gallants in search of their first win in ten matches.
• Kaizer Chiefs will travel to face Richards Bay on Sunday, 16 March, looking to get back to winning ways.
