JUST IN | Court matter against Parys protestors postponed

By Thys Khiba – Parys Magistrate’s Court has been postponed a public violence matter against Thandi Nqai (37), Nthabiseng Mokoena (28), Anna Coetzee (34) and Sandile Magqaza (39) until Monday, 23 January for formal bail application and profiling of the arrested suspects.

This comes after the four accused persons appeared before the court in relation to public violence charges and the Ngwathe Local Municipality service delivery protest.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Sinnah Mpakane confirmed a case of public violence against the four arrested suspects was opened on 16 January 2023 at 07:00  in the morning.

Meanwhile, there are other eleven suspects who are expected to appear in court on Thursday, 19 January facing charges of public violence.

Police officials confirmed that they have arrested four suspects on Monday during the service delivery protest, while seven were arrested yesterday in the morning. The other four suspects were apprehended in the afternoon on Tuesday.

Frustrated residents who barricaded roads with burning tyres and rocks were protesting over water and power cuts.

During the protest angry protestors set alight the family home of Ngwathe executive mayor, Victoria de Beer-Mthombeni.

Local shops have been looted while some roads remain closed.
