EFF to Discipline 11 MPs for Missing Parliamentary Session on Judge Hlophe Impeachment
Pretoria – Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has expressed his dissatisfaction with the absence of 11 EFF members during Wednesday’s parliamentary seating. This session was particularly significant as it saw the historic impeachment vote against suspended Western Cape Judge President John Hlophe.
Wednesday’s parliamentary vote resulted in a historic resolution to impeach a sitting judge, with Judge Hlophe becoming the first in democratic South Africa to be faced with such a sanction. The motion was carried by an overwhelming majority of 305 MPs from various parties, including the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA). The counter votes mainly came from the EFF, with 27 MPs opposing the motion.
EFF Leader, Julius Malema, expressed concern regarding the non-attendance of certain party members. “It has come to my attention that 11 EFF members of parliament did not attend Wednesday parliamentary seating without valid reasons,” Malema stated, emphasizing the absence was unauthorized and against the party’s values and expectations as stipulated in their manifesto.
The party’s manifesto clearly articulates the expectations from its representatives: “All EFF public representatives are expected to attend Parliament and provincial legislatures’ sittings and committees without fail. No EFF public representative will miss sittings or committee meetings without sending an apology to the caucus chief whip.”

Following the missed session, Julius Malema said, “We have asked the EFF Secretary General Marshall Dlamini to correspond with them and we should be getting some way forward in the next 24 hours.” Indications are strong that the absent MPs are facing disciplinary actions in line with the party’s responsiveness to lack of discipline.
Support for the strict stance on discipline was echoed on social media platforms such as Twitter, where users voice their approval. “EFF is all about accountability. No emotions attached when it comes to accountability and transparency,” said one such user .
The EFF has a clear precedent of not tolerating indiscipline within its ranks. In 2023, the party expelled 62 of its members and public representatives. More recently in July, over 400 members, including MPs, provincial legislature members, and councillors, were barred from attending the party’s 10-year celebrations, on grounds of their failure to secure transportation for supporters to the event at the FNB stadium.
