EFF Leader Julius Malema Advocates for Renaming the University of Pretoria to the University of Tshwane
By Thabo Mosia
In a recent address at the University of Pretoria, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema called for the university to be renamed the University of Tshwane. Malema’s speech highlighted his dissatisfaction with the institution’s association with Pretoria, emphasizing the need for a name that better represents the local community and its African roots. This renaming, he argued, would align with the movement towards decolonization and the reclamation of African identity.
Malema praised the EFF Students Command for their ongoing efforts to combat racism and inequality within the university. He described the University of Pretoria as a “heart of racism,” encouraging students to challenge systemic biases and advocate for inclusivity. By renaming the institution, Malema suggested, the university could distance itself from colonial ties and embrace a new identity that reflects its geographical location in Tshwane, rather than Pretoria.
Calls for Inclusivity and Recognition of African Languages
Malema’s speech did not solely focus on the renaming of the university. He also criticized the institution’s approach to language, urging for more inclusivity by incorporating African languages into its curriculum. According to Malema, the dominance of English and Afrikaans in South African educational institutions marginalizes African languages, which he argued should be equally valued in a country with a rich linguistic diversity.
In a similar vein, Malema called on the students to advocate for the university to sever academic ties with Israel, positioning this as a stance against perceived injustices in Palestine. By aligning with this international solidarity movement, he noted, the university could further demonstrate its commitment to human rights.
A Strong Critique of the Democratic Alliance and City Governance
Malema’s speech also addressed broader political issues, particularly the governance of the City of Tshwane. He criticized the Democratic Alliance (DA) for its handling of city resources, accusing it of prioritizing affluent suburbs over historically disadvantaged areas like Soshanguve, Mabopane, and Mamelodi. He referenced various corruption scandals under DA leadership, such as the GladAfrica controversy, alleging that these issues exemplify the party’s failures in governance.
Reflecting on recent political developments, Malema praised the coalition between the EFF, the African National Congress (ANC), and ActionSA to remove the DA from power in Tshwane, with ActionSA’s Nasiphi Moya recently being appointed as the new mayor. Malema argued that this change would bring renewed focus to neglected communities and redirect resources to areas in need.
Encouragement for Youth and the Importance of Education
Addressing the students directly, Malema encouraged them to continue pursuing their education diligently, asserting that their efforts would contribute to a future under EFF governance. He emphasized the role of young people in shaping the future, suggesting that their achievements would not only benefit themselves but also uplift their communities. According to Malema, education is central to the EFF’s vision, and he expressed his hope that students would lead the way in building a South Africa that values economic freedom and equality for all.
The EFF’s Broader Vision for Transformation
Malema’s advocacy for renaming the University of Pretoria is consistent with the EFF’s broader vision for transforming South Africa. He reiterated the party’s commitment to nationalizing key sectors of the economy and ensuring that the benefits of South Africa’s resources remain within local communities. This transformation, he suggested, would be a critical step towards achieving economic freedom and dismantling the lingering structures of colonialism and apartheid.
