Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng

It has been announced that Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng will be taking over from Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela in presiding over the highly anticipated Senzo Meyiwa trial.

This comes as a result of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to suspend Judges Maumela and Nomonde Mngqibisa–Thusi based on the recommendation made by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

The JSC’s recommendation was made due to complaints surrounding the delayed delivery of reserved judgments by both judges, some of which dated back as far as 2016. Chief Justice Raymond Zondo will now form a tribunal to investigate their conduct, determining whether there is evidence of gross misconduct, gross incompetence, or incapacity on their part.

In taking over this high-profile trial, Judge Mokgoatlheng faces immense responsibility and scrutiny. As the newly appointed presiding judge, the eyes of the nation will be on him as he leads the proceedings. It is essential that justice is served efficiently and fairly in this case, and Judge Mokgoatlheng must ensure that all parties are treated equally and given a fair chance at presenting their arguments.

Furthermore, the tribunal formed by Chief Justice Zondo will also assess the impact of the delay in delivering judgments on the affected parties. It is crucial that this investigation is thorough and impartial, as the reputation and credibility of the judiciary system is at stake.

Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng’s appointment signals a renewed effort to prioritize justice and efficiency within the South African judiciary system. Let us hope that he brings a fresh perspective and determination to ensure the timely delivery of reserved judgments and a fair trial for all parties involved in the Senzo Meyiwa case.
