John Steenhuisen Says DA Will Engage in Talks to Prevent ANC-EFF Coalition
By Karabo Sisi – Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen announced on Sunday that the party is set to engage in coalition talks to prevent a potential ANC-EFF coalition. To facilitate these critical negotiations, Tony Leon, former DA leader, will join a high-profile team of negotiators including Helen Zille, Ivan Meyer, Siviwe Gwarube, Alan Winde, and Ryan Coetzee.
The Political Landscape After the 2024 Elections
Following the 2024 national and provincial elections, South Africa faces a hung parliament and three hung provincial legislatures. With preliminary results released, The African National Congress (ANC) has lost its parliamentary majority, receiving just 40.19% of the vote. In a stark turnaround, the DA has garnered 21.80%, while the MK Party, led by former President Jacob Zuma, has surged to 14.59%. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) captured 9.51% of the vote. With 99.93% of votes counted, it is clear that no single party has secured an outright majority.
DA’s Response to Election Outcomes
During a live address on Sunday evening, Steenhuisen expressed gratitude to DA voters and acknowledged the complex political situation. He stated, “The people have spoken. They have not given an outright majority to any party, thereby demanding cooperation from their political leaders.” Emphasising the urgency of the situation, he said, “The DA will do absolutely everything in our power to prevent an ANC-EFF Doomsday Coalition from taking power.”
Tony Leon’s Role
Tony Leon, who led the DA from 1999 to 2007, is widely respected for his diplomatic acumen and political expertise. Under his leadership, the DA saw significant growth, becoming the official opposition party. Leon’s inclusion in this negotiation team is seen as a strategic move, given his experience in coalition-building and governance.
The Federal Executive Meeting
The announcement followed the DA’s Federal Executive meeting in Johannesburg. The meeting was convened to chart a way forward after the unprecedented election results. “The DA’s Federal Executive met to discuss the best way forward for the country after the general elections this week delivered a hung parliament and three hung provincial legislatures,” said the DA in a pre-briefing statement.
ANC’s Stance
Amidst the political upheaval, ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has dismissed any talk of President Cyril Ramaphosa stepping down, despite internal calls for his removal. During a briefing at the IEC results centre, Mbalula confirmed that the ANC is exploring coalition options, led by himself, with potential partners.
EFF’s Stance
The EFF leader also hinted at potential coalition talks, expressing a willingness to work with the ANC to form a stable coalition government. “Our objective is to serve South Africa from 2024 onwards, but we are not desperate for positions and will not sacrifice our principles,” Malema stated.
