Johannesburg Metro Police
By Lerato Mpembe
In response to a surge in criminal activities involving the placement of spikes and large rocks on major freeways, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has significantly increased its patrols across the city’s highways. These dangerous tactics have led to numerous incidents where unsuspecting motorists suffer vehicle damage, and upon stopping, are ambushed and robbed of their belongings.
Deployment Strategy
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed that officers have been strategically deployed to monitor and deter such criminal acts. The primary focus areas include the M1, N3, and N1 freeways, with particular attention to the N1 north stretch between Nasrec and Maraisburg, identified as a hotspot for spiking incidents. Fihla stated, “We have deployed on the freeways… Officers have been deployed to that area to deter any criminal activities happening there.”
Recent Arrests and Operations
The intensified efforts have yielded positive results. In June 2024, Gauteng police arrested 26 suspects linked to spiking incidents on the N1, N4, and R80 routes. Provincial police commissioner Tommy Mthombeni noted, “We have made some progress in combatting spiking incidents in the hotspot areas.”
Earlier, in May 2024, a combined operation involving the South African Police Service (SAPS), private security sectors, and community members was conducted on the N1 and N4 to address the rise in spiking incidents. The operation successfully assisted two vehicles that had been spiked, preventing further attacks on the victims.
Modus Operandi of Criminals
Criminals employ various methods to execute these spiking attacks:
• Placement of Spikes and Rocks: Sharp objects, spikes, or large rocks are strategically placed on the roadway, often concealed with materials like plastic or leaves, to puncture tyres and force motorists to stop.
• Ambush: Once the vehicle is immobilized, perpetrators emerge from hiding spots to rob occupants, sometimes resorting to violence.
• Evolving Tactics: There have been reports of criminals following vehicles that continue driving after hitting spikes, attacking them when they eventually stop due to tyre damage.
Identified Hotspots
Several areas have been identified as spiking hotspots in Gauteng:
• N1 Freeway: Particularly between Midrand and the Vaal River.
• N4 Freeway: Sections between Pretoria and Rustenburg, and Pretoria to Mpumalanga.
• R80 Mabopane Freeway: Stretching from Es’kia Mphahlele Drive to Soshanguve.
• N3 Freeway: Between Leondale and Heidelberg.
Motorists are advised to exercise heightened caution when traveling through these areas, especially during late hours when visibility is reduced.
Safety Recommendations for Motorists
To mitigate the risks associated with spiking incidents, motorists should consider the following precautions:
• Avoid Night Travel: Limit driving during late hours unless absolutely necessary.
• Maintain Vigilance: Stay alert and avoid distractions while driving.
• Do Not Stop Immediately: If you suspect your vehicle has been spiked, continue driving at a reduced speed to a well-lit, populated area before stopping.
• Share Travel Plans: Inform family or friends of your travel routes and expected arrival times.
• Emergency Contacts: Keep emergency numbers readily accessible and consider joining community safety groups for real-time updates.
