Johannesburg Metro Centre
Johannesburg City officials have delayed a scheduled media briefing regarding a fire that occurred at the Metro Centre, leading to its closure. The briefing, initially planned for Tuesday morning, has been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.
Insiders reveal that the fire, which took place on Saturday, was caused by old and faulty transformers. Emergency services spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, confirmed the incident on Monday, stating that there were no injuries and that the fire was quickly contained.
Currently, the Metro Centre is without electricity. Although the city did not issue an official statement regarding the fire, a press briefing has been announced for Tuesday, September 19th.
Situated in Braamfontein, the Metro Centre houses the offices of Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda, City Manager Brink, and Speaker Colleen Makhubele. These officials have since been relocated from the building as a safety precaution.
In an internal memo, Joburg Property Company CEO Helen Botes recommended the closure of the building. She explained that the service provider determined the transformers to be problematic, and a diagnostic report from the provider is still pending. Botes also highlighted that an engineer’s report from 2019 had previously flagged the state of the transformers, stating that they were already 40 years old at the time.
Botes mentioned that the team is currently finalizing the evaluation of requests for proposals. She expressed confidence in submitting a report on the work of the Bid Evaluation Committee for consideration and approval by the city manager next week.
