Johannesburg residents have been grappling with persistent water supply issues, prompting city officials to convene a media briefing to discuss the current challenges and outline planned interventions. The briefing is scheduled for Monday, 11 November 2024, at 13:30, at the Johannesburg Water Head Office in Newtown.

Key Officials to Lead the Briefing

The briefing will be led by Minister of Water and Sanitation, Ms. Pemmy Majodina, alongside Gauteng Premier Mr. Panyaza Lesufi. They will be joined by Deputy Ministers of Water and Sanitation, Mr. David Mahlobo and Mr. Sello Seitiholo, Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Mr. Jacob Mamabolo, Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Councillor Dada Morero, and MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Department, Councillor Jack Sekwaila. Officials from Johannesburg Water will also be present to provide insights into the technical aspects of the water supply system.

Background of the Water Crisis

Johannesburg has been facing significant water supply challenges in recent months. Aging infrastructure has led to substantial water losses, with reports indicating that up to 44% of the city’s water supply is lost due to leaks and theft. Additionally, power outages have disrupted water pumping operations, further exacerbating the situation.

Planned Interventions

In response to the crisis, Johannesburg Water has intensified strategies to curb water losses. The Water Conservation and Water Demand Management (WCWDM) Programme includes projects aimed at improving water supply, such as the Commando System Project, which is currently around 55% complete.

Furthermore, the city has initiated the construction of a new 26-megalitre Brixton reservoir, expected to be completed by April 2025, to augment water needs and mitigate shortages.
