Joe Biden pledged a peaceful and orderly transition of power on Thursday following Donald Trump’s sweeping election win, while the president-elect signalled a departure from Biden’s policies by discussing potential diplomatic engagements with Vladimir Putin. In his first statement post-election, Biden, aged 81, urged Americans to “bring down the temperature,” contrasting sharply with Trump’s staunch rejection of his 2020 loss.
Trump’s decisive victory over Democrat Kamala Harris has already begun to impact U.S. and global political dynamics, mere days after Election Day. With his inauguration looming, Trump has made clear his intention to prioritise changes in both domestic and foreign policy, bringing into focus his commitment to economic and immigration reforms.
Biden’s Commitment to Peaceful Transition of Power
In a nationally broadcast address, Biden emphasised the need for an “orderly” transfer of power, assuring Americans and global leaders of his intent to uphold democratic principles. Biden’s approach to the transition reflects his legacy as a stabilising force in a divided political landscape, contrasting with Trump’s more aggressive agenda.
Biden has extended an invitation to Trump for discussions at the White House, despite Trump’s team not yet signing essential documents to officially commence the transition process. Speaking from the Rose Garden, Biden addressed the Democratic Party’s disappointment, urging unity and resilience while affirming that “a defeat does not mean we are defeated.”
Trump’s Strategic Shift in Foreign Policy
With a track record of admiration for Putin, Trump has hinted at renewed diplomatic engagement with Russia, diverging from Biden’s strict stance since the 2022 Ukraine invasion. Although he has yet to speak directly with the Russian leader, Trump has indicated a willingness to negotiate, underscoring his prior criticism of U.S. aid to Ukraine.
This shift could mark a substantial change in the U.S. approach to the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has already expressed concern, labelling Trump’s potential peace proposals as “dangerous” in a recent statement.
Chinese President Xi Jinping also congratulated Trump on his win, reinforcing Trump’s image as a leader willing to engage with global powers frequently labelled as authoritarian. These developments suggest a potential pivot in U.S. foreign policy, with Trump likely to adopt a more transactional and less interventionist stance than Biden.
Domestic Policy Changes: Immigration and Climate Action
Trump is set to implement an ambitious domestic policy agenda upon his return to the White House, with immigration at the forefront. He has reiterated his commitment to enforcing mass deportations of undocumented migrants, a stance he defended as a necessity, regardless of the financial implications. Trump’s strong position on immigration echoes his 2016 campaign promises and marks a significant shift from Biden’s comparatively lenient approach.
On environmental policy, Trump is poised to dismantle Biden’s climate initiatives. The president-elect has long been sceptical of climate change policies, and his stance to “drill, baby, drill” signals a probable return to fossil fuel dependency. This approach represents a reversal from Biden’s climate-focused agenda, which championed renewable energy investment and green infrastructure.
Despite Trump’s commitment to rolling back environmental policies, his efforts may encounter resistance within Congress, particularly in districts benefiting from Biden’s infrastructure and green energy investments.
Strategic Appointments in Trump’s Administration
In one of his first major personnel announcements, Trump named Susie Wiles as his White House chief of staff, making her the first woman to assume this critical role under his administration. Known for her resilience and tactical acumen, Wiles’ appointment indicates Trump’s intent to build a seasoned and strategic inner circle.
Trump’s roster of potential appointees includes several high-profile figures who embody his administration’s disruptive vision. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a prominent anti-vaccine advocate, is expected to play a significant role in health policy, likely advocating for unconventional health reforms, such as removing fluoride from public water supplies—a controversial move in light of the mineral’s recognised health benefits.
Additionally, Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, could take on a position within Trump’s administration, potentially overseeing government spending audits. Musk’s support for Trump has fuelled speculation around his role, suggesting that he may bring a more business-oriented approach to government efficiency.
Economic Factors Driving Trump’s Victory
Voter sentiment around economic uncertainty and immigration challenges were central to Trump’s success in the recent election. Under Biden, rising inflation and perceived inaction on immigration led to voter dissatisfaction, which Trump effectively capitalised on during his campaign. Trump’s victory, despite his age and a history of legal controversies, underscores the electorate’s demand for change from Biden’s administration.
Trump’s re-election also brings to light the Republican Party’s resilience and adaptability, especially given Trump’s recent criminal conviction and impeachment history. His appeal among voters highlights a broader discontent with the Democratic administration’s handling of core economic issues, setting the stage for a conservative shift in U.S. governance.
