In an effort to combat illegal mining in the Riverlea and surrounding areas, Dr. Mgcini Tshwaku, the MMC for Public Safety in the City of Joburg and EFF Leader , has launched the #manjenamhlanje campaign. The recent joint raid with JMPD’s specialized units in Stormhill marks a proactive step towards addressing this issue.
During the operation, a shootout occurred between Zama-zamas and the officers from the JMPD’s Specialized Unit. Acting Chief of Police Angie Mokasi accompanied Dr. Tshwaku during the raid, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
Joburg EFF MMC Tshwaku Takes Firm Action Against Illegal Mining in Riverlea
Dr. Tshwaku emphasized the city’s determination to prevent illegal activities such as mining from persisting. “We cannot allow Zama-zamas to break the law under our watch,” declared Tshwaku, underlining the need for decisive action.
Despite the two-year operation, this area had never been targeted before, and the joint effort with the JMPD Intelligence allowed the interception of the illegal miners. The exchange of gunfire caused the Zama-zamas to flee, leaving behind their belongings and equipment.
Tshwaku referred to the Zama-zamas as cowards, mocking their attempts to showcase their weaponry. He assured that the JMPD Special Forces are not to be trifled with, emphasizing the vow to eliminate such lawlessness. “You shoot at us, you will meet your maker,” warned Tshwaku firmly.

The operation resulted in one injury and one fatality while authorities were able to seize a significant amount of illegal items, such as assault rifles, dynamite, milling machines, and generators.
The MMC confirmed that the operation is still ongoing, as the fight against illegal mining remains a priority for the City of Joburg’s Public Safety Department.
