Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD)
By Mpho Moloi
The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has issued a traffic advisory for motorists ahead of the Betway Premiership match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, scheduled for Saturday, 03 May 2025, at FNB Stadium. This Soweto Derby, a major event in South Africa’s football calendar, is expected to attract a massive crowd, prompting significant road closures and traffic management measures around the stadium precinct.
Affected Roads and Freeways
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed that approximately 24 streets and freeways will be impacted. Key routes include:
- Nasrec Road
- N1 South and North
- Golden Highway
- Soweto Highway
- Booysens Reserve Road
These closures are designed to ensure pedestrian safety and manage the heavy traffic expected before and after the match.
Contraflow Traffic System on Nasrec Road
To handle the influx of vehicles, a contraflow traffic system will be implemented on Nasrec Road. Fihla explained: - Northern Side: Extends from the N17 traffic circle to Shaft 17 Road.
- Southern Side: Extends from Adcock Ingram Avenue to Recreation Road.
- Lane Configuration:
• Before the match: Three lanes will direct traffic toward the stadium.
• After the match: Four lanes will facilitate traffic leaving the stadium.
This dynamic lane adjustment aims to reduce congestion during peak arrival and departure times.
Soweto Highway Closure Details
The Soweto Highway will be closed to general traffic from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM between the N1 bridge and Mentz Street in Booysens. During this period, only Rea Vaya bus services and Park and Ride vehicles will have access. Additionally, Booysens Reserve Road will be closed between Crownwood Road and League Avenue/Nasrec Road, with limited access granted to Park and Ride services, VIP ticket holders, and accredited media.
Additional Post-Match Closures
Starting at 5:00 PM (17:00) before the match ends, further closures will be enforced to improve traffic flow after the game: - N17 Eastbound: Between the N1 and the Nasrec Road traffic circle.
- Rand Show Road Eastbound: At the N1.
- Aerodrome Road
These measures are based on past experiences at FNB Stadium events and aim to prevent the gridlock often seen after large gatherings.
Public Transport Encouraged
The JMPD strongly recommends that fans use public transport to avoid delays. Options include: - Rea Vaya Buses: Operating all day with routes from various Johannesburg locations, including Park Station for Gautrain users.
- Minibus Taxis: Available at major ranks in Johannesburg and Soweto.
- Park and Ride Services: Operating from select malls and shopping centers.
- E-hailing Services: Designated drop-off and pickup points will be provided for Uber and Bolt users.
Gates at FNB Stadium will open at 11:30 AM, with kickoff at 3:30 PM. Fans are urged to arrive early to account for traffic and security checks.
Advice for Motorists and Residents
Motorists not attending the match should avoid the stadium precinct and use alternative routes such as: - N1 Highway
- M1 Highway
- N12 Highway
- Main Reef Road
- Aerodrome Road
- Adcock Ingram Avenue
Fihla appealed to residents near FNB Stadium to remain patient, noting that traffic volumes will spike, especially after the match. JMPD officers will be deployed to enforce regulations, assist with traffic flow, and ensure pedestrian safety
Event Context
The Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates is a historic rivalry that consistently draws over 80,000 spectators to FNB Stadium. With no general public parking available inside the precinct, and illegal parking resulting in towing, planning ahead is essential for a smooth experience.
