Jenny van Dyk Appointed as SPAR Proteas New Head Coach

Jenny Van Dyk

Netball South Africa has named Jenny van Dyk as the new head coach of the SPAR Proteas on Wednesday. Since the departure of former head coach Norma Plummer in December 2023, the national team has been anxiously awaiting a new leader. Following a comprehensive recruitment process, which began even before Plummer’s exit, Netball South Africa arrived at their decision to appoint Van Dyk.

Netball South Africa articulated in an official statement, “Following a meticulous process of reviewing applications and conducting rounds of interviews, Netball South Africa has finally found the best candidate to lead the team forward and guide them to the 2027 Netball World Cup hosted down under in Australia.”

The president of Netball South Africa, Cecilia Molokwane, emphasized the thoroughness of the selection process. “This process of appointing a head coach for the SPAR Proteas has not been easy. We wanted to ensure that we do a proper job in selecting the best person for the role. We needed to be thorough in the selection process, from interviews right through to appointment. A suitable candidate for us is an individual who can assist as we rebuild the team and begin to compete. With a few of our senior players retiring, we are starting anew, and we need a coach who will build with us. As a federation, we are confident that we have found the right person to help us do exactly that,” Molokwane remarked.

The new head coach, Van Dyk, has been allocated a four-year contract. She will be accompanied by the talents of former SPAR Proteas captain and Maties coach, Zanele Mdodana, who shall assist her. Van Dyk expressed her honour and enthusiasm for her new role: “It is a fantastic feeling and quite an honour to be bestowed the responsibility to lead the national team (SPAR Proteas). I have waited so long to don this green blazer. I am also happy to be joined by Zanele, she has something that sets her soul on fire, and I believe that we will be a formidable team. As a coach for the SPAR Proteas, my objective is to continue from where my predecessor left off, we need to build a winning team – to follow a proudly South African culture of netball. We need to get into the culture of winning and having a netball identity. I believe that we are equal to the task and start competing and winning,” Van Dyk elaborated.

Van Dyk’s credentials are impressive, with a record of securing five consecutive titles in the domestic Telkom Netball League with the Jaguars and leading the University of Pretoria to several victories in the Varsity Cup. She was also in charge of the under-21 team set to compete in the Netball World Youth Cup 2025 Qualifiers this March.

Molokwane concluded with an expression of confidence and best wishes, “As a federation, we have full confidence in who we have chosen as our head coach, and we are certain that the team will take us to new heights and compete. On behalf of the entire netball family, I would like to wish the entire coaching staff everything of the best.”

Van Dyk’s immediate mandate is the assembly of a thirty-player squad and finalising the team she will commence working with at the earliest convenience. Netball South Africa will release the schedule for the upcoming training camp in due course.

Minister of Sports, Zizi Kodwa, extended congratulations via Twitter, commenting, “Congratulations to Ms Jenny van Dyk and Ms @zanele_mdodana who have been appointed as Head Coach and Assistant Coach of the @Netball_SA SPAR Proteas respectively. I wish you all the very best as you lead our national team to higher honours. We are behind you! #SparProteas”.
