Jacob Zuma MK Party vs ANC
By Thabo Mosia – The “Jacob Zuma’s Umkhonto Wesizwe Party” (“MK Party”) has confirmed that it is currently in discussions with the “African National Congress” (“ANC”) to explore potential coalition agreements. This revelation comes amid heightened political negotiations following the national election results.
Engagements with the ANC
In a detailed press statement released by the “MK Party” spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndhlela, it was revealed that although preliminary discussions have occurred, a formal meeting is scheduled soon. Ndhlela stated, “while the MK Party is open to hearing varied perspectives, their primary commitment remains towards the betterment of the South African majority, particularly the black community.”
He added, “We commit and reaffirm to engage only in the future of South Africa, which prioritizes the interests of the people, especially the black majority who are poor, unemployed, homeless, and landless against the interests of white monopoly capital and markets.”
ANC Secretary General’s Comments
Earlier, ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula, addressing the media, highlighted the prolonged delay in further engagements with the MK Party. Mbalula stated, “They tell us they are waiting for uBaba, and uBaba akatholakaili (he is not available).” He emphasised that the ANC remains open to negotiations with all parties, including the MK Party.
Election Results and Analysis
The 2024 national elections yielded significant results that are shaping the current coalition talks:
| Party | Votes | Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| ANC | 6,459,683 | 40.18% |
| DA | 3,505,735 | 21.81% |
| MK | 2,344,309 | 14.58% |
| EFF | 1,529,961 | 9.52% |
Comparing these figures to the 2019 elections, there has been a noticeable decline for the ANC, which previously garnered 57% of the votes. This drop underscores the necessity for strategic coalitions to maintain governance.
Reactions from ANC Alliances and Partners
The possibility of any coalition involving the DA has stirred significant dissent within the ANC and its alliances. Both the South African Communist Party (“SACP”) and COSATU have vehemently opposed any partnership with the DA, labelling it as a betrayal to the working class and the impoverished.
The Black Business Council has proposed three potential coalition arrangements, all excluding the DA:
- ANC, EFF, PA
- ANC, EFF, IFP
- ANC, EFF, IFP, and MK
Internal Protests and Opinions
As the ANC’s NEC meeting progresses in Ekurhuleni, a faction of ANC members is protesting against any coalition with the DA, warning that it may exacerbate racial tensions. Dr. Zweli Mkhize suggested that such a deal would alienate voters and does not align with the people’s will. He advocated for a coalition comprising the ANC, EFF, PA, and MK.
Similarly, Dr. Matthews Phosa, another ANC stalwart, voiced concerns, claiming that an ANC-DA coalition would predominantly serve white business interests. Phosa recommended forming a “Government of National Unity” including the EFF and IFP to genuinely reflect the diversified interests of the populace.
Lindiwe Sisulu also supported this sentiment, cautioning that aligning with the DA would undermine the sacrifices and memories of South Africa’s struggle icons.
