Jacob Zuma Urges Support for Former MK Youth Leader Bonginkosi Khanyile Amid July 2021 Unrest Trial

uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party

President Jacob Zuma has called upon members of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party to rally behind Bonginkosi Khanyile, the former leader of the MK Party Youth League, as he appears in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today. Khanyile faces charges related to the July 2021 unrest that erupted following Zuma’s imprisonment.

Background on the July 2021 Unrest

In July 2021, South Africa experienced widespread unrest triggered by the incarceration of former President Jacob Zuma for contempt of court. The turmoil led to extensive looting, property destruction, and significant economic losses, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces. The violence resulted in over 350 fatalities and damages exceeding $2 billion.

Charges Against Bonginkosi Khanyile

Bonginkosi Khanyile, known for his activism during the Fees Must Fall movement, is accused of inciting public violence during the 2021 riots. The state alleges that Khanyile used public platforms to encourage looting and unrest in Durban, demanding Zuma’s release. A video recording purportedly captures Khanyile making such calls, which has become central to the prosecution’s case.

Recent Developments in Khanyile’s Trial

The trial has encountered several delays:

• Missed Court Appearance: On 3 March 2025, Khanyile failed to appear in court, leading to his re-arrest. He cited ill health and adverse weather conditions as reasons for his absence. Subsequently, a warrant was issued, and his bail was provisionally revoked.
• Bail Reinstatement: On 5 March 2025, Magistrate Dawn Somaroo reinstated Khanyile’s bail, allowing him temporary release pending further proceedings.
• Trial Postponement: The trial, initially set to commence on 6 March 2025, was postponed due to changes in Khanyile’s legal representation. The court rescheduled the pre-trial hearing for 13 March 2025.

Jacob Zuma’s Call to MK Members

In light of Khanyile’s court appearance, Jacob Zuma has appealed to MK Party members to demonstrate solidarity by attending the proceedings. Zuma emphasized the importance of supporting comrades facing legal challenges, especially those stemming from actions taken during politically charged periods. This call aligns with Zuma’s ongoing efforts to unify and strengthen the MK Party’s presence and influence in South African politics.

The MK Party’s Position

The MK Party, under Zuma’s leadership, has positioned itself as a formidable force challenging the ruling African National Congress (ANC). The party aims to address issues of social justice, economic inequality, and land reform. Zuma has been vocal about the need for black unity ahead of the upcoming elections, urging supporters to prepare for the 2026 local government vote and the 2029 national elections.

Public and Political Reactions

Zuma’s call has elicited mixed reactions:

• Supporters’ View: Many MK Party members and supporters view the charges against Khanyile as politically motivated, asserting that his actions were in defense of Zuma and the broader struggle against perceived injustices.
• Critics’ Perspective: Opponents argue that incitement to violence cannot be justified, regardless of the political context. They emphasize the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability for actions that lead to public disorder.
