By Thys Khiba – Former President Jacob Zuma’s private prosecution matter filed against State Advocate Billy Downer and News24 journalist Karyn Maughan to be heard in the Pietermaritzburg, KwaZuluNatal High Court this Monday.

This comes after Zuma opened a criminal complaint, in October last year, at the Pietermaritzburg police station against State Advocate Downer for allegedly leaking his confidential medical records to a journalist Maughan.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) opted to give Zuma a private prosecution certificate, in June 2022, after it refused to prosecute Downer.

Speaking to the media, Jacob Zuma Foundation spokesperson Mzwanele Manyi confirmed Zuma will be present in court.

“Just to confirm that indeed his excellency president Zuma, free man will be in Pietermaritzburg High Court for the prviateprosecution on accused number one Advocate Downer SC and accused number two Karyn Maughan who both violated section 41 subsection 6 of the NPA Act,” said Manyi.

This time around Zuma will enjoy the support of his political party as provincial chairperson of the ANC, Siboniso Nduma is expected to lead a delegation to the High Court to attend Zuma’s case.

Spokesperson for ANC in KwaZulu Natal, Mafika Mndebeleindicated they are expecting ANC members to turnout in their numbers to show solidarity with Zuma.

“As the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has promised, we have made all the necessary arrangement and we encourage all our members to support the president so that when he appears in court, he receives warm support,” said Mndebele.

“We will continue to support president Jacob Zuma as we believe as the ANC in KZN, justice delayed is justice denied. The president has been in and out of court for a number of years. We urge the state institution to ensure that the quickly conclude this.”
