Former South African President Jacob Zuma has appointed Floyd Shivambu as the new Secretary-General of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party). The appointment, effective immediately, follows the resignation of former Secretary-General Dr. Sifiso Maseko. Shivambu, a former senior leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), is expected to bring his political acumen and organisational experience to the position, marking a new era for the MKP under Zuma’s leadership.
Shivambu’s appointment, confirmed on Saturday night, came after consultations between Zuma and MK Party National Officials. Magasela Mzobe, Head of the Presidency in the MK Party, released an official statement, noting that Zuma had engaged in extensive discussions with party leadership before making the final decision. “The President of uMkhonto weSizwe Party, Commander General Jacob Zuma, received a letter of resignation from Secretary General Commander Dr. Sifiso Maseko on Tuesday, 29 October 2024, requesting to be relieved from his responsibilities,” said Mzobe. Maseko’s resignation, he added, was motivated by a desire to return to his role as Chief Director in the Gauteng Department of Health, where he was on suspension pending an internal disciplinary process.
Background on Maseko’s Departure
Dr. Sifiso Maseko’s tenure as Secretary-General of the MK Party has been fraught with challenges. Maseko, who previously faced an internal disciplinary process within the Gauteng Department of Health, had requested to step down from his MKP responsibilities, citing his intent to refocus on his professional obligations. Although his resignation was reportedly amicable, sources within the party indicate that Maseko’s performance had been a subject of concern among some party members. Critics argued that he had not met the demanding standards required for the role, which ultimately led to a review of his position.
Maseko’s resignation was accepted by Zuma, who commended him for his service. The former Secretary-General will, however, retain his role as a member of the MK Party’s National High Command, the organisation’s highest decision-making body. “Commander Maseko is released as Secretary-General of uMkhonto weSizwe but will retain his responsibilities as a member of the National High Command,” the statement from Mzobe clarified.
Shivambu’s Political Journey and Shift from EFF to MK Party
Floyd Shivambu’s appointment as Secretary-General marks a significant shift in his political career. Known for his tenure as the Deputy President of the EFF, Shivambu was one of the founding members of the party, which he co-established with Julius Malema in 2013. His resignation from the EFF in August came as a surprise to many, sparking speculation about his future political ambitions.
Shivambu’s move to the MK Party reflects his alignment with Jacob Zuma’s vision for a militarised and disciplined political movement rooted in the legacy of the anti-apartheid struggle. Since leaving the EFF, Shivambu has taken on organisational roles within the MK Party, working closely with Zuma and other senior officials to advance the party’s objectives. His experience in mobilising support and his strong oratory skills are expected to play a pivotal role in his new position, as he takes on the responsibilities outlined by the MKP constitution.
The Selection Process and Zuma’s Influence
Shivambu’s appointment was not without intrigue. Sources within the MK Party revealed that Zuma had initially favoured Shivambu as his preferred candidate for Secretary-General. However, some within Zuma’s inner circle reportedly resisted this choice, advocating for a more discreet selection process. According to insiders, a covert interview process was conducted between late September and early October, with other candidates, including Joe Ndlela and Ndumiso Matlala, vying for the role.
In the end, Shivambu emerged as the chosen candidate. The decision was reportedly based on his extensive political experience, his longstanding commitment to the principles of the MK Party, and his alignment with Zuma’s leadership approach. Zuma’s influence in the decision was apparent, as he personally oversaw the process to ensure that the new Secretary-General would be someone capable of advancing the party’s strategic goals.
Statement from MK Party on the Appointment
The MK Party released a statement confirming Shivambu’s appointment and outlining the transition in leadership. “As prescribed by the MK Party Constitution, The President has, in consultation with the MK Party National Officials, appointed Commander Nyiko Floyd Shivambu as the Secretary-General of uMkhonto weSizwe, effective immediately,” the statement read. “Commander Nyiko Floyd Shivambu will assume all the functions and tasks of Secretary-General as prescribed by the Constitution of the MKP.”
The statement also acknowledged Maseko’s contributions to the party, with Zuma expressing “full confidence in Secretary-General Nyiko Floyd Shivambu and the entire leadership of uMkhonto weSizwe Party.” This endorsement signals Zuma’s trust in Shivambu’s leadership abilities and his commitment to steering the party in a direction aligned with its core values.
Former EFF Members Joining the MK Party
Shivambu’s appointment comes amid a broader shift in political alliances, with other prominent former EFF members also transitioning to the MK Party. Among them are Advocate Dali Mpofu and Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane, both of whom resigned from the EFF to join the MKP. Mpofu and Mkhwebane’s move reflects a growing trend of EFF members aligning themselves with the MK Party, drawn by its focus on military discipline and a staunch commitment to African self-determination.
This migration from the EFF to the MK Party has raised questions about the future direction of both parties, particularly as the MKP positions itself as a formidable alternative within South Africa’s political landscape. The addition of high-profile figures like Mpofu, Mkhwebane, and Shivambu bolsters the MK Party’s influence, potentially reshaping its appeal to a broader base of South African voters.
Reactions from Political Analysts and Public Response
The appointment of Shivambu as Secretary-General has generated significant interest among political analysts and the South African public. Analysts suggest that Zuma’s decision to appoint Shivambu signals a consolidation of power within the MK Party, as the former president seeks to strengthen the party’s leadership with individuals he considers loyal and capable. The move is seen as part of a broader strategy by Zuma to position the MK Party as a force to be reckoned with in South African politics.
Public response to Shivambu’s appointment has been mixed. While some supporters welcome his leadership, citing his experience and dedication to African empowerment, others are more cautious, questioning his ability to adapt to the MK Party’s disciplined structure. Social media reactions have reflected this division, with debates around Shivambu’s transition from the EFF to the MK Party and the implications for his political philosophy.
