By Thys Khiba – Amogelang Tyawana who appeared in the Itsoseng Magistrate’s Court this week for allegedly killing his mother in Itsoseng Zone 3, in North West, is out on a warning until he returns to court on 20 January 2023.

Tyawana was set to appear in court last week but the matter was struck off the roll due to insufficient evidence.

“The prosecutor gave instructions that the investigating officer should go and conduct another investigation to satisfy the court, which then led to the suspect being rearrested on 11 November,” Tselanyane said.

A 19-year-old pupil is accused of stabbing his mother to death after she allegedly refused to give him money.

The body of a member of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), Kelebogile Judith Tyawana was found in a pool of blood on 7 November. It is alleged that the 38-year-old mother was stabbed to death in a backroom of her aunt’s house where she and her son had been residing.

According to the North West police spokesperson, Captain Sam
Tselanyane, that morning, Tyawana allegedly asked his mother for money, claiming he needed it for a bus ticket.

Apparently his mother refused to give money and told him that he already had enough credits on his bus ticket to go to school.

Painting a picture of what happened, Tselanyane said as the morning went by, the mother, who had plans of moving out of the backroom, informed her aunt that she would be heading out to look at houses.

“She went to go bath, but when her aunt realised she had been gone for a while, she became concerned [and] she went to check up on her.

“The backroom door was closed, so she proceeded to the deceased’s room. She struggled to push the door, but when she forced entry, she noticed the body lying behind the door full of blood,” Tselanyane said.

Police officials arrived at the scene around 11:00 to find the body on the floor covered in blood with wounds on the neck, chin, and head, Tselanyane said.

The accused son handed himself over to the police, and was charged with murder.

The SANDF spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini  indicated that the incident is a private matter, related to domestic issue and should be treated as a criminal matter.

“The circumstances are very important, where and how it happened. If it is a domestic issue, it is treated as such, and the [SANDF] has no involvement.

We are cautious about commenting on private matters even if the victim was a [SANDF] member. We acknowledge what has happened and send condolences to the family,” Dlamini said.

The Provincial spokesperson for Education, Elias Malindi refused to comment on the matter as it occurred outside school.
