By Sibongile Besani – The good thing about this conference is that it is contested for the first time since 2008. Matosa always warned us against conferences that were not contested. Our experience is that he was right because we plunged the ANC into divisions and deep scars.
Our responsibility as ANC Free State is to ensure that we do not plunge this contestation into stalemate, where two lobby groups exist beyond conference. We should also gaurd against arrogance of numbers.
What is common amongst us is that we know the past and we know that it was bad. We all want a better future and we are on the cusp of it. We also do not really know what it holds for us but we all have hope that the future should be better. This should be the basis of this contestation and acceptance of the outcome.
The coming PEC has to manage the transition with care and decisiveness. The ANC should be bolder is getting rid of ill-discipline and leading society. The foundarion remains a principled unity.
Let us make the best of this contestation. We are on the border of the past and the future, there is no turning back. Venturing into the future without lessons would be foolish, therefore understand the past without being enslaved to it. Equally, venturing into the future with baggage of the past would be fatuous.
The future can never be journey into the good old days. It is about the new that is inspired by the best of the past.
