Dr. Irvin Khoza has been re-elected as the Chairman of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) during the National Soccer League’s (NSL) Quadrennial General Meeting (QGM) held on 13 November 2024 at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. This re-election marks the continuation of Khoza’s influential leadership, which has been instrumental in shaping the landscape of South African football.
Continuity in Leadership
Dr. Khoza, often referred to as the “Iron Duke,” has been at the helm of the PSL since its inception in 1996. His unopposed re-election underscores the confidence that the football fraternity places in his vision and leadership. Under his stewardship, the PSL has seen substantial growth, becoming one of the most competitive and financially stable leagues on the African continent.
Executive Committee Restructuring
The QGM also saw notable changes within the PSL’s Executive Committee (ExCo). The newly elected ExCo members are:
• Kaizer Motaung: Founder and Chairman of Kaizer Chiefs, Motaung brings decades of experience and a deep understanding of the game.
• Mato Madlala: Serving as the acting CEO of the PSL and owner of Lamontville Golden Arrows, Madlala has been pivotal in the league’s administrative functions.
• Dr. Rejoice Simelane: A respected figure in sports administration, Simelane’s expertise is expected to contribute significantly to the league’s governance.
• Stanley Matthews: CEO of SuperSport United, Matthews’ strategic insights have been valuable in the club’s successes and are anticipated to benefit the league.
• Johnny Mogaladi: Chairman of Polokwane City, Mogaladi’s inclusion brings a fresh perspective to the committee.
• Tim Sukazi: Owner of TS Galaxy, Sukazi’s entrepreneurial approach is expected to add dynamism to the ExCo.
• Sifiso “Jomo” Biyela: Chairman of Richards Bay FC, Biyela’s leadership has been instrumental in his club’s rise in South African football.
Notably, John Comitis of Cape Town City FC and Rob Benadie of Stellenbosch FC are no longer part of the ExCo. The reasons for their exclusion have not been publicly detailed, but such changes are part of the league’s periodic restructuring to infuse new ideas and perspectives into its leadership.
Reactions from the Football Community
The re-election of Dr. Khoza and the new ExCo lineup have been met with widespread approval within the South African football community. Many stakeholders believe that this blend of seasoned administrators and fresh faces will drive the PSL to new heights.
Kaizer Motaung, a stalwart of South African football, expressed his commitment to working collaboratively with the ExCo to further the interests of the league. “Our collective goal is to enhance the quality of football and ensure the sustainability of our clubs,” Motaung stated.
Mato Madlala highlighted the importance of unity and strategic planning. “The PSL has a rich history, and it’s our responsibility to build on that foundation, embracing innovation while respecting our traditions,” she remarked.
