The Western Cape Police have confirmed the occurrence of the event and are currently looking into the circumstances that led to this unfortunate situation.
According to Western Cape Police Spokesperson, Colonel Andrè Traut, the accident occurred around 09:05 AM when the armoured Nyala they were traveling in overturned and came to rest in the median of the highway. “Nine police officers who were traveling in the armoured Nyala were injured when the vehicle overturned. No other vehicles were involved and no prisoners escaped as suggested by social media posts doing the rounds,” stated Traut, clarifying the specifics of the mishap and dispelling rumours circulating online.
The injured officers have been receiving medical treatment for their injuries, as the police community and their families await further news. The Western Cape Police have reassured the public that the well-being of their members is a priority and that the circumstances leading to the accident are currently under thorough investigation.
“This incident highlights the unpredictable and risky nature of police work. Our members put their lives at risk daily to ensure our safety, and our thoughts are with the injured officers and their families during this challenging time,” expressed Colonel Traut, reminding the public of the sacrifices made by law enforcement.
The Western Cape Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward to assist in painting a clearer picture of the events leading to the accident. As investigations continue, the law enforcement community stands in solidarity with the injured, hoping for their swift and full recovery.
