International Flights
By Thobeka Makume
International flights have resumed at Syria’s main airport in Damascus, marking a significant step toward normalcy following the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad last month. On Tuesday, a Syrian Airlines flight departed for Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates at approximately 11:45 am local time, signifying the first international commercial flight from the airport since 8 December.
“Today marks a new beginning,” stated Anis Fallouh, the director of Damascus International Airport. “We have started welcoming outbound and inbound international flights.”
Background and Recent Developments
The resumption of international flights comes after a period of significant upheaval in Syria. In early December, Islamist-led rebel forces launched a rapid offensive, culminating in the capture of Damascus and the departure of President Assad to Russia. The ensuing instability led to the suspension of commercial flights and the temporary closure of Damascus International Airport.
During this period, only international aid planes and foreign diplomatic delegations were permitted to land, ensuring the continuation of humanitarian assistance and diplomatic engagements. Domestic flights also faced disruptions but began to resume operations on 18 December, with the first flight departing from Damascus to Aleppo, carrying 43 passengers, including journalists.
Current Status of Damascus International Airport
With the reinstatement of international flights, Damascus International Airport is poised to reestablish its role as a central hub for air travel in Syria. The airport, which opened in the mid-1970s, was the country’s busiest prior to the civil war, handling an estimated 5.5 million passengers in 2010. The recent reopening is expected to facilitate increased connectivity and support efforts toward national recovery and reconstruction.
International Relations and Future Prospects
The reopening of Damascus International Airport to international flights is anticipated to bolster Syria’s diplomatic and economic relations, particularly with neighboring countries and regional partners. The resumption of flights to destinations such as Sharjah underscores the potential for renewed economic activity and collaboration.
As Syria navigates this transitional period, the restoration of international air travel represents a positive development in the nation’s journey toward stability and growth.
